Looking at our past few games, our problem has been our attack and NOT our defence for once. Which is why i am opting for Veron rather than Butt.

Neither of them have been lighting it up on the field so its not really a question of who is on form as much as it is a question of what is really needed on the field. Butt's ball-winning or Veron's playmaking. With Keane out Veron's ability to 'control' a game is also needed.

Opinions?

I think we'll start with 451. Butt can get hold of the ball and give it to Seba, who can control the game in Keane's absence, and if Scholes doesnt play, I expect Diego to get a rare start.

He had a start in the reserves and didn't score there either.

I suppose he won't be rushed back. Maybe he'll play another one or two reserves match before coming back. But I certainly prefer him to Phil at right back.

And what has Diego done to replace Giggs ? I thought Ryan was beginning to show some form against Borough. Diego should now be consigned permanently to the Reserves until he's scoring regularly there and has got some confidence back. Ole or Paul is a toss up to partner Ruud although I personally prefer Scholes in an attacking role with Ole to come on later. It also means you can play Veron and Butt in midfield. Don't leave Ruud on his own though - it does not work.

agree with everything you say here. Im of the opinion that 4-4-1-1 or 4-5-1 will just not work for United with the current personel. for it to work Ruuds touch needs to improve a lot as it comes back at us to quickly. the 2nd point is for the 'hole' you need someone who can pick the ball up and run at defenders at speed IMO. Dare i say it but McManaman or Jordi Cryuff would suit that role perfectly.
For now however, i fear we're not going to see 4-4-2 much this season whilst we effectively have only Ruud & ole as out and out strikers. Fergie will not play the 2 together because he currently has no other pairing to rotate them with. If we get an injury to Ole or Ruud we're stuffed. Priority for the next transfer window should be a new striker.

I think Fergie fancies Ryan for that role (in the hole). He certainly can hold the ball and run at people. The only thing is that he's so left footed and such an individualist that his best and most effective position is down the left with occasional forays into the middle where he has been effective from time to time but not consistently.
Fergie's striving for greater fluidity in attack to make us less predictable.

I don't know what that chump is moaning about anyway? The formation in the second half against West Brom wasn't much different to the one I said, except with one extra defender!

I Disagree..... Ruuds touch has been fine thus far. He's holding up the ball reasonably well and his quick feet are actually buying us more time on the ball than we would usually get. As for the hole, I don't believe that someone like Jordi or Macca would work in that position. They posess great pace and can run at defenders, but would usually be picked up by a physically stronger midfielder a lot of the time and lose the ball. I mean, Cantona played in that position for United a lot and he didn't go round players. No, I think someone to play that position must have good strength, and be able to link up the midfield and full backs with some degree of creativity. But our midfielders must make some intelligent runs in the first place, which isn't really happening right now, for United. Which is why I was against the sale of Cole, because he could play alongside Ruud effectively and drop off and use his pace combined with good strength and linking up ability to get others into the game. Give Fergie and Especially Queiroz a chance to work this 4-4-1-1 thing because Carlos is an amazing coach!

Is this a misprint? What is this obsession with Diego ? He's now in ahead of Ruud. I suggest you read the report of the reserves match against Everton. The fellow hasn't got a clue at the moment. He must stay in the Reserves until he and Fergie can work out his best position. So far it seems a major error to think he could ever take Cole's place. Yes he's still only 23 - the same age Denis Law was when he joined United !! Not that I'm trying to compare as of course there is no comparison - just keeping things in perspective.

Much as i would like him to play 4-4-2, i think he'll play 4-5-1. Wouldn't be suprised to see him give Ricardo a start, although i don't think Carroll deserves to be dropped to 3rd choice.
I agree with most people that we should play 2 up front, but 4-5-1 can work as long as Nicky Butt doesn't drop too deep. I think he was guilty of that against Boro, also the formation means that Seba must get further forward than he has been doing. We were seriously lacking a player arriving late into the box. The role that Scholes did so brilliantly for 5 years before the arrival of Seba
