Forlan - will he come good?

i think he will. he needs to start some games and get some match practice against quality opposition

The simple fact is he just doesn't turn it on against better opposition. Lack of ability, confidence or what? This lack of an extra striker situation is getting more serious.....

Yes, it's really starting to worry me a bit. Fergie said after the match that Ruud won't be playing on Sunday...that with a shin injury, if you don't give it proper rest it can develop into a bigger, longer-term problem. I've read that Ole is supposed to be back for Sunday's match. But obviously neither one of them is totally fit and we have the Champions League qualifier coming up in a week and a half. I think we really need to bring in another quality striker even if it means selling someone. At this point in time, if Ruud and Ole were both out, would any one of us really feel comfortable having Forlan and Giggs as our 2 starting strikers for any length of time?

I don't think so. Many of us have already said we need another striker for a long time. If Ruud and Ole are injured we are in big trouble, that is already obvious even before this match. Forlan may improve with time, but at present he is no more than another Fortune -- quite impressive when playing mediocre opponents but looked totally outclassed against more serious ones.

Ok then explain what is it about Forlan that gives you such hope in him?

I hope I am proved wrong , but to me he is just another Paborsky a promiser that will never deliver. As I said I would love to be proved wrong
So go on Diego do the business son <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

One fecking match without scoring and suddenly he's crap again, wake up, that happens, and this is only pre-season.

Forlan sufferd last night what most of the team except Ruud, Keane and Barthez suffered from. A total and complete lack of match fitness. start judging the players hwne they have finally got this under their belts. Else, it's uselees to claim the have improved or declined from last season. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

jesus Christ! It's a pre season friendly!! The time to judge Forlan is by the end of next season if he's been given a run in the team. He's a 22, settling into a new continent and style of football. So far he has shown promise. Give the guy a chance FFS!!!

Thought he did alright myself in the withdrawn role, linked up the play a treat. And its a friendly. I'd say we played 4-4-1-1 in the first half, so to expect him to be on the end of everything is unreasonable, that wasn't his role. We played the game as a friendly, used it to practice our passing, it certainly wasn't very competitive. Thats what these matches are like. Our one new player, Rio, had a fantastic game, so you've got to be pleased. I would say that some of the problems of last season look like they'll still be here this season - Barthez is injury prone and makes poor decisions, Silvestre is a weak link, and we haven't got a best midfield 4 yet. Still, it was a good run out, good to get the England boys back.

he's poor against Ajax ... I think he's not that type who can play in a tight game like this ... but against less "pressing" team where more space are avail. on field, he could be damaging at times ...
Conclusion is - we need another good backup for games like this ... ie. another striker in Duff's mould ;) ... said it again here but well, I know it's unlikely ..

He had some good ideas, showed good vision, and linked up well. Didn't get forward much, but I think that was his role. Duff maybe would be great, but they're asking silly money for him and Kenyon has publically ruled him out. Unless something new happens on that front I really think we can forget about him. Besides, Ronaldo might be available now and if he is actually sold it had better be to us rather than Real, or otherwise thats the CL for the next few years wrapped up by them.

he was poor against Ajax, but then so was Ruud, Becks, Giggs etc. He needs to be given a fair chance and time, while the squad has to work with him. All I would complain about now is he is coming in to midfield too much. That may be his way, and he did it to good effect in the Prem but his team-mates should urge him forward and give him some proper chances to feed off so he can get a goal or two. He can't make his own chances. To compare him to Poborsky after 15 games is a bit unjust.
