The rumours have been bouncing around for a while, but they seem to be intensifying again.

A couple of weeks ago Forlan was reported as saying, "If a good offer arrived, I'd leave." He denied he said it, but then qualified it with, "It would need an irresistible offer, for me and the club."

Today Marca says he's been offered to Real Madrid for 18m Euros (negotiable). It could be a made up story, but the thing is, no one would be surprised if it was true. He's had a few injuries this season, he hasn't been scoring and the Atletico fans are pretty unforgiving towards him.

That's something I'd noticed before and didn't really get, because I always loved the guy when he was with us. However, for Spanish speakers (and determined google translators) take a look at this article which summarises the background.

Basically the fans see him as a mercenary who shows up and does his job. It's not helped by the fact that he's got no (off field) connection with his teammates - the only one he ever talks to is Simao according to that article.

I've got to say the stories surprise me, but there we go. Who needs a Diego then? Us? Liverpool? Madrid? Hmmmm.

If any one is divided here is a picture of his girlfriend to help you ponder.

Too old plus we don't need any strikers.

That's a very skewed view of the article. The article states there are two types of players: those who proclaim their undying love for a team, kiss the badge, etc. and those who don't do that if they don't feel it but still perform. In that world, Diego is called a "mercenary" by fans, which is a very lousy description: a lot of the former go on to kiss other badges as well, the latter is just a professional football player to me.

The article goes on to state how fans don't warm to "mercenaries" (aka model professionals) even if they score so many important goals and bring trophies, as Forlán has done for them. And then comments on how he is always first for training, works hard, does the job, yet doesn't socialise much with other teammates outside "work". What's wrong with that? Keano anyone? And have you seen his girlfriend? Why would you leave home other than work?

Non-story.

It's a non-story in the sense there's nothing there to put another team off buying him. He's not accused of being disruptive or of not trying.

But it is a story in the sense that it helps explain why Atletico may be considering selling one of their best players - even though he spent the summer demonstrating just how good he is. If the right club comes up with the cash I think he'll leave.

Why has he never been bought by the big two in Spain. I just don't understand it.

Doesn't he regularly score more goals than all of those?

They're all younger I guess. And he's never been a superstar so Madrid wouldn't buy him. Even if they wanted to now I can't see Atletico selling him. And Barca have never ry needed him. They've had Eto'o, Ibra and Villa one after the other as their main striker. All are better than Forlan (Ibra maybe inferior)
