Who is this Philippe Sanderos? Swiss centre-back, maybe Penny could tell us more about him, but according to the Observer he's the best young defender in Europe and arriving at Highbury this summer. Anyone know anything about him? Have to be honest and say i've never heard of him. :o
 
swiss - young and srong. so the papers say. never actually saw him play. i have seen PM and he's very good at such a young age.
 
He played in the european U17 finals last summer leading the swiss to victory. He's 19 I think, United tried to sign him, and he actually was sitting behind the United players at one game but a couple of weeks later he agreed to join Arsenal, apparently because he felt he had a better chance of getting into their team because they had older defenders.
 
I can understand his thinking he'll get more opportunities at Arsenal. I never heard about our bid - was it kept secret??

Maybe you should have told Fergie he shouldn't bother signing Sanderos, because he sure tried ;)

We don't desperately need a CB, and our defence has had a great season, but we should be looking for excellence in all positions. And with Laurent Blanc going, it certainly raises the question of replacing him.
IMO we have Rio and Wes as primary CBs, Wes with RB as a secondary role. Mickey Silvestre at LB with CB a secondary option. JOS' revelation on the flank now marks him a LB or RB more than a CB. Gaz is a RB who can play CB.
Another quality CB does not seem excessive. Its true we have 5 players who can play CB to some degree, but only two who have it as their best position IMO- Rio and Wes. Rio-Wes is a good pairing but there is plenty of room for improvement; if given the oppurtunity of adding an excellent young CB like Philipe Mexes we should go for it(especially where a bargain might be had). He would improve the quality of the team, not just add to something we already have.
