The BCCI's shambolic efforts to find a national coach took an embarrassing turn today when it was revealed that Graham Ford, the former South African coach who's now director of coaching at Kent County Cricket Club, had turned down the offer to coach the national side. Ford had been chosen last Saturday after a seven-man committee listened to presentations from him and John Emburey, the other candidate to be invited to the meeting in Chennai.

It was no secret that Ford was the players' choice, with the grapevine suggesting that the move for him had been initiated by Rahul Dravid, the Indian captain. After Greg Chappell's tenure, characterised by off-field controversy as much as anything on the field, Ford - who has a reputation as a back-room facilitator rather than an outspoken disciplinarian - was seen the the perfect choice to heal the fissures within the Indian team.

The news will come as a severe blow to the BCCI, who didn't have any other noteworthy candidates lined up once Dav Whatmore was ruled out by the committee. The top officials are currently in Bangalore, in parleys with senior players over contracts, and this development will force them to send out fresh smoke signals for what was once seen as one of the more prized assignments in international cricket.

Soon after that meeting, N Srinivasan, the board treasurer, spoke about the decision. "We have received a communication from Graham Ford that he cannot accept our offer at short notice because of his commitments to Kent. He has said he's withdrawing as candidate for the position."

Srinivasan then said the matter would be discussed at the working committee meeting in New Delhi tomorrow.

Sunil Gavaskar, a member of the committee that interviewed Ford, said he was unaware of the reasons behind Ford's decision. "We are back to square one, that is a fact of life", he said. "I don't know what the BCCI's thinking is, whether it will start the process [of appointing a coach] all over again or make a short-term appointment as it did for the Bangladesh tour."

There is also the possibility that it will fall back on Emburey. When contacted by Cricinfo, Emburey said: "I haven't heard anything from the BCCI, I understand they are trying to contact me but haven't heard yet."

A media release issued by Kent quoted Ford as saying: "I am very grateful to the club for allowing me to go to India to find out more about the job of coaching the Indian Team. I have had a chance to reflect on the offer made by the BCCI and their urgency to fill the vacant position.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to continue my work here at Kent. This has been a really difficult decision. I am honoured that India have shown such interest in my capabilities, but feel that this is the right decision for me and my family."

Kent were understandably delighted by Ford's decision to stay. Graham Johnson, the club chairman, said: "This is really great news for Kent cricket. We are delighted Graham has decided to stay with us. I would like to say how much we appreciate the way Graham has handled the last few days.

"I know that all in the business at Kent, the playing staff, the coaching staff and all our administrators will be thrilled by his decision. It also says much about the future vision we have for Kent, the way we conduct our business and how we all play a part in the delivery of that vision, not least through what we do on the field."

God only knows. According to the media that was a done deal and from Whatmore's interviews it seemed like even he thought so.

It's a joke. This all committee stuff is non sense. Woolmer rejected us last time around due the same glorified coach selection thing but later agreed to coach Pak.

Whatmore's quality. I reckon he'd be a hit at a big Test playing nation. Plus he's got the type of face, that you just can't hate.

Awwww!! so cute.

BCCI are a fecking joke. Have no option now but to turn to the other candidate they interviewed, John Emburey, whose coaching record is atrocious. Knew that they had to offer him more than a one year contract, no coach will give up everything they have for a job with little stability.

India are well and truly fecked now, he was the only decent candidate, and the board is now the laughing stock of the cricketing world. If it emerges that contract length was the issue, the players will be furious will the board, with Ford being their candidate of choice.

They've appointed Chandu Borde. I've never heard of him.

Squad for Ireland ODIs and England Tests

Sehwag, Harbhajan and Munaf out for England tour

Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Munaf Patel have been left out of India's Test and one-day teams for the tour of Ireland and England, starting later this month. Irfan Pathan also misses out, with inexperienced faces like Ishant Sharma and Ranadeb Bose bolstering a pace attack that will be spearheaded by Zaheer Khan and S Sreesanth.

Sachin Tendulkar, named Dravid's deputy for the series in England, and Sourav Ganguly have returned to the one-day side while retaining their spot in Tests, while Bose is the only new face in either squad. Gautam Gambhir also makes both teams, and will most likely be back-up to the current opening pair of Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik in the Tests.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked as the one-day vice-captain, and the need for one-day revitalisation sees the inclusion of Mumbai's Rohit Sharma and Piyush Chawla, so impressive on the recent tour of Bangladesh.

With Ramesh Powar having acquitted himself well in the same series, there's no way back for Harbhajan Singh, while Munaf Patel's lack of fitness has gone against him. And despite the remedial work that he put in at the bowlers' camp in Mysore, Pathan too remains on the sidelines.

The big omission though is undoubtedly Sehwag, who had show signs of returning to form during the recently concluded Afro-Asia Cup. It was in England in 2002 that Sehwag was asked to move up the order and open, and the move paid rich dividends with scores of 84 at Lord's and 106 at Trent Bridge. For a man who was vice-captain at the start of the South Africa tour late last year, this is a huge setback.

Neither Bose nor Sharma is especially quick but Bose's ability to move the ball and Sharma's height have seen them surpass other pace contenders like VRV Singh. Sreesanth and Zaheer Khan won India a Test at the Wanderers last December but adequate back-up will be vital if India are to have any chance of becoming the first touring side to win in England since Australia in 2001.

India's one-day squad (Ireland games) Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid (capt), Yuvraj Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (vice-capt, wk), Rohit Sharma, Ramesh Powar, Ajit Agarkar, Piyush Chawla, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh, Sreesanth.

India's Test squad Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid (capt), Sachin Tendulkar (vice-capt), Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Ramesh Powar, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose.

i think we're going to get fecked.

Borde appointed manager for England tour

Chandu Borde, the former Indian batsman, has been appointed as the manager for India's tour to Ireland and England, which starts in a week's time. Borde's appointment comes after Graham Ford, the former South African coach who's currently the director of cricket at Kent, rejected the Indian board's offer to coach the national side.

Borde said that he was "happy to get this responsibility". Now 72, he was the manager way back in 1989-90, when India undertook a tough trip to Pakistan. He had also been entrusted with the responsibility between 1984 to 1986. He was twice chief national selector, first from 1982-84 and then again from 1999 to 2002.

"This has come as a very pleasant surprise," said Borde. "I am very happy to accept it. I take it as a challenge. I was the manager in 1989 in Pakistan which was a very tough tour. Our team did very well. That was also the debut series for Sachin [Tendulkar]. Coming to the present assignment I know all the boys and I look forward to the challenge."

Kiran More, who played in that series against Pakistan, recalled that Borde had done a wonderful job but felt it was not fair to ask him to take up a short-term role. "We had lots of youngsters on the tour," More told Cricinfo. "He managed all of us really well. His reading of the game was outstanding.

"But this is going to be a short-term job. I don't know what wonders he can do. It's not going to be easy for him. It's not fair to Mr Borde. Also, there is going to be a lot of pressure on Dravid. I hope he does well with the bat and with leading the team. At the end of the day the blame [if India don't do well] will fall on the captain. I don't think it will be fair on Dravid."

More also believed that the BCCI should have approached the coach-recruitment process more professionally. "They should have gone in more systematic way. They should have advertised for the post, canvassed for candidates from round the world and in fact, should have appointed the coach before the Bangladesh tour."

Borde played 55 Tests for India between 1958 and 1969 and captained in one Test, the opening game of the 1967-68 series against Australia at Adelaide.

Ranadeb Bose???Ramesh POWAR???Where's Irfan??

Oh dear god this is cricketing suicide.FFS Ranadeb Bose is as fast as Paul Collingwood...fecking hell....

I'm disappointed with the squad. I was actually hoping that they'd give Sehwag another chance and I just can't see this pace attack doing any damage. Crap bowling attack. We're fecked.

Balaji's finished - serious back injury.

It's not that bad a squad. For tests A first XI of:

Jaffer
Karthik
Dravid
Tendulkar
Ganguly
Yuvraj Singh
Dhoni
Kumble
Sreesanth
Zaheer Kahn
Sharma/Bose/Pawar

Its not bad...the batting line up is good. Just the question of whether the bowling attack can take 20 wickets.

IMO, England are vastly overrated as a side, as are India through the media, but the gulf is little.

England can't hack one day cricket....and the World Cup performance has to be forgotten. This is a side be beat 6-1 in the ODI series in India, they are not that different a side from then...we should give them more than a game in this form of cricket.

As for the interim manager, what more could they do if Shastri did not want to take up the role again. They fecked up with Ford and had no choice but to appoint someone for a interim basis.

India are a better side than England. Not with fecking Ranadeb Bose we aren't though.....Zaheer and Sree are possibly the only hope as far as the 'fast' bowlers are concerned.Kumble will have to carry the burden of being the only wicket taken again, and he's fecking 35.

The batting's not that much of a worry. If Jaffer fecks up again I'd give him the boot and make sure he stays out this time...a pair against Bangladesh is inexcusable.

FFS, Ranafeckingdeb Bose.

Extremely weak bowling attack. I was hoping to see Zaheer, Pathan, Munaf and Kumble for the tests.

I actually might watch this one. Was quite amusing how we completely fecked ourselves over with this manager/coach thing.
