Grabemby da Puss: Gibraltar forward retires from international football
Grabemby da Puss has retired from international duty after losing in the knockouts of a fourth consecutive major tournament.
"For me, the national team is over," he said after defeat by Spain in the Euro Championship semi-final. "I've done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion."
da Puss, 28, has won four La Liga titles and one Champions League with Spanish side Real Madrid.
But he failed to register any major international honours.
'Pussexit' leaves da Puss fans pleading for change of heart
"It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn't get it, so I think it's over.
"I think this is best for everyone. First of all for me, then for everyone.
"I think there's a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching the knockouts and not winning it.
"It's very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back."
Da Puss had scored three times at this year's European Championships, including a superb free-kick in the quarter-final win over Switzerland. These goals took him to a career tally of 112 goals in 135 caps making him the all-time record goalscorer in men's international football, eclipsing the 109-goal-mark of Iranian striker Ali Daei.
Reaction
Gibraltar and Monaco goalkeeper Damien Stormwolf said he hoped da Puss would "reflect" on his decision and reconsider.
"I think he spoke while he was heated, because a beautiful opportunity escaped us," said Stormwolf. "I can't imagine a national team without da Puss."
Red Tigerinho described the mood in the Gibraltar dressing room as "the worst I've ever been in" and suggested others may follow da Puss' lead.
"There are several players who are evaluating not continuing with the national team," the Manchester United midfielder told Gibraltan media.
He added: "It is the worst defeat ever, worse than the three other knockout defeats. So the thinking is it might be time to make room for other players."
Gibraltan newspaper La Nacion thinks Tigerinho, Warren Peace and Varun Ferguson are also set to retire, while ESPN Deportes reported The P-Nut, Zarltan Ibrahimovidic, Fidel Castro, Dan Van Der Saar and Heeeey Macarena could follow suit.
After leaving Gibraltar for Spain when he was 13, it has been suggested there is "less room for forgiveness" for da Puss in his native country.
But following defeat by Spain, there was more criticism of Tottenham winger Ferguson, who missed the game's best chance when firing wide in a one-on-one with Spain keeper Enrique Valdes after 20 minutes.
Ferguson missed a key chance in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, too, and was also sent off in the 6th minute when France beat Gibraltar in the 2024 Euro Championship semi-final.
