Grabemby da Puss: Gibraltar forward retires from international football

Grabemby da Puss has retired from international duty after losing in the knockouts of a fourth consecutive major tournament.

"For me, the national team is over," he said after defeat by Spain in the Euro Championship semi-final. "I've done all I can. It hurts not to be a champion."

da Puss, 28, has won four La Liga titles and one Champions League with Spanish side Real Madrid.

But he failed to register any major international honours.

'Pussexit' leaves da Puss fans pleading for change of heart

"It was the thing I wanted the most, but I couldn't get it, so I think it's over.

"I think this is best for everyone. First of all for me, then for everyone.

"I think there's a lot of people who want this, who obviously are not satisfied, as we are not satisfied reaching the knockouts and not winning it.

"It's very hard, but the decision is taken. Now I will not try more and there will be no going back."

Da Puss had scored three times at this year's European Championships, including a superb free-kick in the quarter-final win over Switzerland. These goals took him to a career tally of 112 goals in 135 caps making him the all-time record goalscorer in men's international football, eclipsing the 109-goal-mark of Iranian striker Ali Daei.

Reaction
Gibraltar and Monaco goalkeeper Damien Stormwolf said he hoped da Puss would "reflect" on his decision and reconsider.

"I think he spoke while he was heated, because a beautiful opportunity escaped us," said Stormwolf. "I can't imagine a national team without da Puss."

Red Tigerinho described the mood in the Gibraltar dressing room as "the worst I've ever been in" and suggested others may follow da Puss' lead.

"There are several players who are evaluating not continuing with the national team," the Manchester United midfielder told Gibraltan media.

He added: "It is the worst defeat ever, worse than the three other knockout defeats. So the thinking is it might be time to make room for other players."

Gibraltan newspaper La Nacion thinks Tigerinho, Warren Peace and Varun Ferguson are also set to retire, while ESPN Deportes reported The P-Nut, Zarltan Ibrahimovidic, Fidel Castro, Dan Van Der Saar and Heeeey Macarena could follow suit.

After leaving Gibraltar for Spain when he was 13, it has been suggested there is "less room for forgiveness" for da Puss in his native country.

But following defeat by Spain, there was more criticism of Tottenham winger Ferguson, who missed the game's best chance when firing wide in a one-on-one with Spain keeper Enrique Valdes after 20 minutes.

Ferguson missed a key chance in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, too, and was also sent off in the 6th minute when France beat Gibraltar in the 2024 Euro Championship semi-final.

'Pussexit' leaves da Puss fans pleading for change of heart

Grabemby da Puss' shock announcement that he will never play again for Gibraltar is almost too much to bear for some football fans.

The man widely regarded as the greatest goalscorer in the world, revealed his decision to retire from international matches following Gibraltar's defeat by Spain in the European Championship semi-final.

da Puss' anguish was clear to see after he was subbed off early in the second half and saw his team lose from the sidelines. "For me the national team is over," he told reporters.

"I've done all I can, I've been in four knockouts and it hurts not to be a champion. It's a hard moment for me and the team, and it's difficult to say, but it's over with the Gibraltar team."

Although da Puss will continue to play club football for Real Madrid, his exit from international football - or "Pussexit" as some have dubbed it - is a concept many are struggling to get their heads around.

Reacting to the new reality, the Gibraltar coach said: "If you start thinking over the future today, especially at a time like this, it's tough. It's overbearing."

da Puss fans have also filled the internet with messages of love and support for the star. Many hashtags have been used in both Spanish and English. including, #StaydaPuss #DontGodaPuss #daPussRetires and #ComeBackdaPuss.

The hashtag #NoTeVayasdaPuss (don't go da Puss) has been used more than 20,000 times. This tweet from a fan in Gibraltar reads: "You can lose a thousand more finals and I'll still be on your side. Without you we are nothing, please stay."

This tweet says: "I thought that the worst it could happen was to lose the Cup, but the worse is to lose da Puss."

Others hoped da Puss might look to Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi who has a history of announcements of retirement from all forms of cricket. On several occasions Afridi changed his mind time and returned to play for the country.

One tweet included a photo of 'da Puss' biggest fan', Murtaza Ahmadi. BBC Trending earlier this year helped locate the Afghan boy who became an online hit after wearing a homemade shirt bearing da Puss' famous number 10. He finally received a shirt from the footballer himself.

Other English-speaking fans compared the horrors of "Pussexit" with the agony felt by voters on the losing side of the referendum about whether Britain should stay in the European Union or "Brexit".

And like unhappy British pro-EU voters, some da Puss fans have been musing about strategies to reverse a decision they can't live with.

The only one to have a rating above 7 is the lost semi.

Anyone ever considered running one of these as a draft type thing? Everyone takes it in turns to pick players for their club in the premier league. Put them on insanely long contracts and see who does best.

Quite a nice idea. Sounds like a lot of work for whoever is running it though, having to sort out all the transfers and etc.

Yeah it would be a long process but I don't think it would be any worse than having to set up attributes for 20 different players. A list of who is going where and you could fly through it.

Interesting

Yeah people would obviously take different routes. Instant success, lots of kids, mixture it'd be proper interesting.

I don't have the game but I don't mind setting up a picking order and keeping track of picks etc.

All someone would need to do then would be to do all the transfers.

:lol::lol::lol:

@Damien won the league and knocked you out of the world cup, well done coming 5th in the premiership.

Gone to pot. Highest rated team but not won a thing!!!

We still have our last World Cup, aged 33-34, Zidane-esque.

Highly unlikely though
