first of all, this may be in the wrong forum, if it is move it.

but i fish alot, i love the sport, but all my friends dont think its a sport.

i just want to see how many of you actually think it is a sport, and if anyone else fishes/or watches fishing programmes.

*fishing is the most participated sport in england.

I prefer deep-sea fishing, aka deep sea drinking:lol:

I also enjoy it though I think that Marcello has it right, it's a recreational pastime.

many people make a living out of it catering to fishermen as guides, charter boat skippers, etc but it's still only a hobby for those doing it.

its on sky sports, and theres competitions etc in it.

i think its classed as a sport, but most people dont see it as one.

It is classed as a sport, but i don't see it as one.
More of a hobby.

They do have world championships in fishing, but to be honest I've always considered it a hobby.

I do lots of coarse fishing.

Tried fishing for Marlin in Mauritius when my daughter got married last year, after about 2 hours I was sick as a dog and then I couldn't give a fcuk, just wanted to get back onto land. Never again! :wenger:

looks great on the telly when others are doing it. the reality isn't always as nice. fed the fish huh?

id love to go marlin fishing, but the reality of it is, youre not going to catch one.

i have done piking, biggest ive caught is only 18lb though, i only really match fish now.

trying to save up for a new pole, but i got no money

I wouldn't say it's a sport, more a past time. like trainspotting, only less stupid.

it's a good way to fool yourself into thinking you're having a relaxing time when in actual fact you spend the whole day being irritated and wound up by every conceivable thing.

if it does get boring, noodlehair's eternal losing battle with the world of nature provides an often hilarious distraction.

I hate fishing.

The only type I can tolerate is the once a year i used to go out on a charter. Up early, breakfast waiting for you on the boat, equipment ready for you, hooks baited for you, fish finder and local knowledge so you don't have to feck around, back by 1pm, off to the pub for lunch and the crew then give you about 10kg of fillets when you get back from lunch for a fish BBQ in the evening.

All for about 40 quid.

depending on where you are I expect - but most marlin are catch and release only.

I used to do a lot of catch and release. The finer the fish the more likely I was to release it. also has a lot to do with how many fish I've caught.
If I had one or two and that was enough to eat then I'd keep fishing if I had the time and release the rest.
some people have said that's cruel but the fish never seemed to mind being put back in the water.

Fishing's great. it's just so different from everything else, and is a really effective way of temporarily forgetting about whatever shite happens to be transpiring back in the real world.

Never take your girlfriend/missus/other half with you though. They'll hate it, and most likely consider it a deliberately planned form of torture, the consequences of which are not good.

and the Dr has a point. Wildlife hates me. The last time I went fishing, a swan bit my foot, wasps stung me, some gimp let his dog go for a swim across where my line was, and when I went to take a piss, loads of ducks came out of the bush and ate all my food.

Fishing

I dont't knwo if anybody here is in a position to know or not but, could you explain to me how it is that people who are visually impaired fish? What is it, electornic equpment to help them out?

A significant proportion of Marlins that are tagged and released subsequently die since many of them vomit their stomach out to try to get rid of the lure and are subsequently easy targets for sharks. I knew someone who did some work on the subject and I can't remember the exact figures but I remembered being shocked.

well i was thinkig of tag and release, ive been fishiong for about 11 years now, and i can say, ive never ever killed a fish on purpose.

yes, you can get bite alarms, when you get a bite, it lets of a 'BEEP', (im actually making one in electronics for a project), anyway, aslong as you get remember where you left your rod, and dont fall in the pond, youl be fine.

that's disgusting. I'd doubt I'd fish for them if I knew that was happening. does that occur with other fish species?

I know that's a bit contradictory seeing as I enjoy fishing but I can honestly say that it really pains me to see the fish suffering. I remember one time when the fish swallowed the lure so deep that I had to cut it out of him, thereby killing the fish that I intended to release. That put me off for a long while.

reality these days is that I don't go but maybe twice a year now. the kids keep me too busy and they're not into it - yet.

many fish die in the water after a "catch and release". they fight so hard the succumb to it. i use a fly rod and some guys (gals as well) that use 3 weights and lighter think they're the balls because the rod is smaller and lighter and it prolongs the fight hence does more damage to the fish. trout/salmon mostly.

i dont know about fly fishing, semms boring, but i wont judge it completely as ive never tried it, might be really fun.

It is a good question. I don't know. I only know the bit about Marlin because I met a bloke who was researching this very thing.

If I fish I like to fish for fast growing medium sized eating fish where I know they aren't endangered. Dolphin fish are a favorite because they grow fast, fight hard (not on a game fishing scale of course) and are very tasty. I think they are called Wahoo elsewhere (or did I imagine that?).

The biggest fish I ever caught was a 60kg Yellow Fin Tuna which was very tasty indeed.

wibble, i think i know the answer.

i think sometimes the reason they vomit their stomachs out is because of the air pressure.

they are used to living deep in the sea, and when they finally get dragged up, the air pressure realeases and thei stomach rises out of their mouth.

anyway, i dont sea fish so i am probably wrong, but i remember hearing that on a fishing programme.

You are wrong I'm afraid. Marlin swim freely to near the surface to take a lure and are known to rapidly change depth without consequence to their swim bladders (which probably wouldn't cause the effect on their stomachs anyway). Prime Marlin season is during the breeding season (another reason I don't like this sort of fishing) when they congregate in shallow waters to mate so they aren't being dragged up from the depths by fishermen.

not really. same as any other fishing really. you cast and then , depending on the size of the fish , hand fight it or get it on the reel. you can fly fish for any size fish that you can catch on those massive poles that just drift the bait about. much hard to drink and fly fish at the same time.

I went fishing once. Sat all evening and then all next morning feeding the damn fish and caught nothing. Shortly after I went back to the hotel this 5 year old girl went with a little string and caught 10-12 little ones.

Hate fishing.
