Of all the players we're still linked with. I think Finnan is probably the one I'd like to see at Old Trafford the most.

I know Fergie thinks highly of him. But, is there any more depth than that?

I was very impressed with Finnan in the world cup.

I think he would give us strength in depth in the right back position. Especially if Gary Neville moves into the middle along side Rio.

Barthez

Finnan Gaz Rio Silvestre

I'd quite like to see that back 4 in front of Barthez.

We we're before the World Cup. Quite strongly. Especially as Fergie commented on him. I'll try and dig up the quote

i remember saf throwing out a couple of hints about him. but w/three players able to cover rb would maybe bridge at lb be a better option?

gimme bridge and (listen, dans) id be willing to part with silvestre ...

I thought Finnan could play left or right. Or am I trusting Champ Manager too much ;)

SAF originally wated Carr but after he got injured he turned his attention to Finnan. Both can play eitehr side and both are good defenders and dangerous going forward. Carr has recovered and plyed for Spurs the other day and looks to be on his way back to full fitness. He's also a supporter and I'd love to see him "marauding" down the righ a la R Carlos.
:D

I'd go for Puyol personally, and we've already made one bid for him according to the player himself. He's going to be a world class rb, and is not far off it already, yet very young.

since when do finnan and carr play left back as well ??

They can play both sides, the fact that they are recognised RB's is one thing but Carr has played LB for Ireland and would be a great asset.

That's what I thought as well thumper. Finnan could be a good signing, as a squad player.

1) Would Finnan be much of an improvement on Gary?

and

2) if not, haven't we got enough cover with Phil and Wes for the right back position?</strong><hr></blockquote>

To answer you questions (sorry...)

1)No, he wouldn't be much of an improvement.
2)However, he would give us an extra, versatile full-back, which is needed since Irwin has left. I think Finnan would be happy in a rotation role, maybe?

Finnan was nothing special at the WC and even at club level it's not like he stood out at Fulham.

Coly from Senegal did a lot better than finnan at the WC.

Finnan is a better footballer than Neville ... he'd be first choice right-back if he joined. Neville is a better center-half than right-back.

It would be close but I always felt that G Neville should stay in the centre.

We should buy a right-back - Carr if his injuries have cleaned up or perhaps Coly if he really is as good as his WC and African Nations Cup performances have shown.

Kinell, what's happened? Mickey not returning your calls or something?

We should be thinking about adding one more to the defence players we have. Not substracting another one. We need one more naturally left footed player.

I forgot to add: British if possible, European if neccesary, South American/African only if he's the last player on earth. And even then, MAYBE.

There was an interview with Fergie on RTE television the other day.
(He was over for some benefit in Ireland)
I think it was actually filmed the day before Ferdinand signed coz he was still checking in on what was going on by mobile while playing golf.
He did say however that given that Ferdinand was sewn up, his absolute priority was to get in full backs before the season starts.
no mention made of strikers or attacking Irish wingers. :(
he also neatly dodged the issue of sales.
Still it looks like Finnan is a good possibility.
