Truth like rain don't give a feck who it falls on.
Okay so my pc is now broke to the point I can't fix it. Everything I look at brings back a different error. I think I've fixed it by removing a component, then it does it again. Nobody seems to know how to fix it.

So I'm saying sod it and buying a new one. I currently have

Q9550
SoundBlaster Live! XtremeGamer
4GB Ram
9800GTX x2
500GB HD

I'm looking at;

i7 Processor
In built sound card, will move my other over from my current rig
6GB Ram
ATI 5870
1TB HD

I can get the new machine for £800 for just the base unit as I get a discount with Dell through work. Then I plan to sell off the components from my old rig to bring a bit back.

So Caftards, see if anyone knows anything cheaper that delivers the same/more performance!

Well first things first, what's it for? Browsing? Intensive work? Heavy gaming?

PCs are evolved way more than they actually need to be anymore, because the processor and RAM consumption of apps and games just isn't really increasing like it used to.

Fair enough though. I'd go for ATI and Athlon right now though, they're streets ahead of Intel and nVidia at the moment.

What specific ones? I've never ever had an ATI or AMD I've always used Intel/nVidia so the serious numbers mean nothing to me. I just see Radeon HD [Insert Random Number] and I don't know if it's high end or budget.

ATI are ahead of nVidia in raw specs at the moment, 'cos they've just released their latest generation. But in the middle of the high-end bracket, nVidia are well worth looking at.

And Athlon are behind Intel in nearly every respect. Price is the only one they have the beating of them on, and that's because they're not as good. Even then, the difference is marginal.

No one is "streets ahead" of anyone else.

Well, that's a blatant little lie, isn't it? In what possible way?

I dont know about Intel vs Athlon but ATI definately had a edge over NVidia with their latest range, it seems whether its budget, mid-range or high end all of ATI's cards seem to outperform Nvidia - or it was a few months back when i was getting a new graphics card

Okay, so is 980 for the rig I put above worth it? Or are they ripping me off and I can get better or the same for cheaper?

I stopped keeping myself up to date with pc components years ago.

You dont really need an i7 with 6gb ram! Go for i5+4gb ram and ati 5970 or 5870 which is also powerful than 470 let alone 460!

Even 6850 is better than 460 and is only $20 more expensive!

Why are you going for i7 and 6gb? You say you want a cheap solution. As VidaRed said it makes far more sense to go for i5 and 4GB RAM. You'd be saving a lot of money as well.

And definitely ATI over NVIDIA. The 58xx and 59xx series are definitely better than the 460 and their power consumption is much lesser.

I see many are confused why 6850/70 aren't better than 5850/70 but the former isn't supposed to replace the latter! The 6950/70 will replace 5850/70 series.

I don't want it cheap necessarily, I want the best I can get within that price range. I wanted to know if I could get the same performance cheaper, not cheaper bits cheaper! :) I'll look into the ATI cards, that's what I don't understand as I've never used one of those before, also due to the discounts I get it's the same price for me to get an i7 as it is an i5, the 460 was pushing the price up which will bring it down if I switch to the ATI.

What I wanted to know is if I could get the same or increased performance level for less elsewhere.
