Last year was the first year where FFP sanctions were handed out, with PSG and City the most high profile casualties.
So far the sanctions have not been much more than a firm slap on the wrist. However, I think the severity of the sanctions will ratchet up particularly for repeat offenders.
I know some feel FFP has no teeth but ultimately it is the existing established European clubs that want this in place. NonE of these clubs want competition for CL places from clubs bought by owners with deep pockets. They want to keep the status quo just as it is for as long as possible.
With that in mind I think it will start to have an impact over the next few years.
And by impact I mean a reduction in transfer fees and player wages. Transfer fees and wages will have to come back to where they make economic sense. As with FFP every club will have to be run like a business.
Current fees of £40m fee plus £10m pa annum wages for top but not the best in the world players just don't make sense. Over the course of a typical contract that is almost £100m for one player!
How far will fees and wages fall?
Not really sure but I think he have hit a peak and Bale may remain the most expensive players for quite some time.
What that in mind, IF, we really do have another £140m to spend is now the window to spend it in?
