Righto, some advice needed.

I'm a busy man. I don't have 30 spare hours to learn the complexities of fiddly controls before I can have fun. I like football. I like football games. I would like a new football game that I can pick up and play as a solo player mostly, but occasionally with one or 2 mates. I hanker after an arcade style experience rather than a simulation, but I would still like a degree of realism in the physics and player control.

I used to love football games on the SNES and PS1 but since then they seem to have just got more and more complicated with a long, steep learning curve that rewards the player who has the time to dedicate to them, but not the casual gamer. Am I a relic of the past or is there a footie game out there for me?

I was under the impression that PES used to be the purist's choice and FIFA the casual gamer's choice, but the reviews of the latest ones seem to suggest that is no longer the case. The last football game I bought was PES 2008 and tbh I enjoyed it but got bored quickly because I didn't have the time to become much more than a button masher.

I'm not interested in sparking a FIFA vs PES debate, I'm just looking for honest opinions from people who have played them as to which football game on the PS3 fits the bill for me. Surely there must be one.

Any thoughts?

PES hasn't been the purists choice since 2008. They both have different styles, I play a lot of PES with my roommate and he always calls me a "typical fifa player" because I try to pass a lot instead of directly shooting. Honestly if I was playing friends, PES is more fun and unpredictable but if I was playing online/single player I'd pick FIFA in a heartbeat.

Thanks Lynk. I've never really played FIFA since the SNES days, and it's changed so much since then. I'm not much of an online gamer, and I reckon I'd be too shit at any football game to change that so it's going to be mostly solo, unless I can get my 3 year old to learn quick!

Ask plan m

The Pro Evo Soccer and Winning Eleven games were fantastic in the 1990s and early 2000 and up until around 2008. EA's FIFA could only dream of serving up the realism and experience that the Konami game offered. Since then however, a new team took over FIFA (EA Canada I believe?) and the Pro Evo Soccer franchise has sadly stagnated and got worse over the years but the latest PES is better than the last few installments.

FIFA seems to be the people's choice these days simply because it seems to play a better game of football although the diehard PES fanboys will tell you different.

Both games have their flaws but the majority seem to prefer FIFA these days. That's not my opinion, that is FACHT [/benitez]

Since PS1 games work on PS3 just get this from eBay...

so PS2 games don't work, but PS1 games do?

Incidentally, that was a quantum leap in football gaming... I remember seeing the players visibly doing a Cruijff-turn was absolutely brilliant... and it had Blur's song 2 as its main tune :)

PS2 games only work on some of the earlier PS3 models, but PS1 games work on all of them.

Yeah it was a great game. I wish I knew where my copy was :(

This Is Football needs a reboot. Or that Red Card one. Or a true SWOS update.

So it seems the consensus is still that FIFA is the one for players like me (shit ones with no friends) but perhaps for slightly different reasons than before.

Thanks.

I have a fat 1st Gen PS3 so I can play PS1, 2 and 3 games. :D

Looking for up to date players though. Beckham is my age, it's hard to suspend your disbelief that much!

It's got a pretty good Career Mode this year if you're into single player - some of the transfers can be unrealistic but if you ignore that it's extremely enjoyable.

Be warned though - FIFA has a steep learning curve this year. When you do get used to it, it plays a fantastic game of football. At first it can be frustrating though (the defending that is) so if you're not an experience footy game person, lower the difficulty level to semi pro or maybe pro.

(You can also change the defending mechanics in Controller Settings - you can have old skool type FIFA defending or the newer Tactical Defending)

Yeah I heard that Stoke always seem to have £20million to spend on transfers and can attract players like Drogba.

Thanks for that, I haven't bought a footy game since PES 2008, so I would say I'm not experienced. What I found frustrating with that one was that the practice modes were useless for learning the more advanced controls. Why they didn't have a show and repeat type training mode I don't know. That would make it so much easier for those new to these games to learn how to play them.

Nah the best footy games were the old ISS games on the SNES made by Konami! Much better than any of the FIFA games back in the day - FIFA only started getting decent in recent years (IMHO of course)

The music!

Bought FIFA 12 last night. Can't sort out the shooting though, having got used to PES button configuration. Rooney seems to think the open net is abhorrent :)

Thanks for the advice, I think I made the right choice.

It's not problem changing the controller to have it like PES. Just can switch to alternate or just change each button manually the way you prefer it.

No problem, hope you enjoy. I use the PES layout for FIFA - always have done :)
