Fifa 08 demo

The animation is slightly better, the level of difficulty is little bit higher and EA Sports made Manchester United a better team with greater team chemistry.

Does anybody actually play this game anymore ?

I've always found Fifa too "arcady".

I play both Fifa and PES, but in PES I find more fun, maybe because of the best gameplay in the world.

But that doesn't mean Fifa sucks by a mile... It's still good game.

I'm looking forward to playing this. I still think Pes '08 will own it though!

i checked out the EA forums, according to many, the 08 is just a patched 07 and its still shite

WARNING: Post is too long Neutral Laughing ... I've played lots of matches now and been writing down notes and I have no idea how long they'd be Shocked

Horrible --these may not ruin the game, but each of those items can single handedly change the game from good to great (if they were fixed/addressed that is)

1. Slide tackle still too straight. Players push or block the ball (unrealistic) instead of trying to win the ball and take possession of the ball.

2. No “power meter” for manual throughballs/passes. Suggests that all players pass the same in terms of how much holding the button for is too much, which is unrealistic. There should be a power meter and depending on the player (and the situation/context) it should power up differently.

3. AI still attacks the same way whether you're playing Semi-Pro or Legendary (using Demo Expander here). It's just a matter of my goalie getting much worse, my players dumber, and the CPU passing around faster. Attacking the same way faster isn't always a good thing if the attacking strategy itself is not good. I'll just get the ball back faster that's all.

Bad --each one doesn't affect the game much, but the fact that there are so many of them, hurt the game imo

1. An offside icon shows up on the players name when he’s offside. Yes this is bad because it seems this is more for “Be A Pro” but the whole idea is to be playing like a pro. What separates the star players from the okay ones is their awareness. If I need an icon to tell me if I’m offside or not then that’s not very much Pro-like.

2. Ball is “kicked” without even touching the player’s foot.

3. No quick throw-ins, goal-kicks..etc (only quick free-kicks).

4. For quick free-kicks, you cannot move the kicker around to pass/lob the ball to better places, there should be more freedom when taking a quick free-kick because often we want to pass the ball back or start an attack from the opposite side.

5. Goalkeeper very rarely catches the ball even for situation that he’d probably be able to catch it in real life (especially for a keeper like Dida, van der Sar..etc).

6. Goalkeepers 90+% of the time deflect a shot and it unrealistically goes for a corner. In real life, deflected shots occur many times however not as often as the goalkeeper *blocking* a shot and the ball is turned back into play, not out for a corner

7. There’s a camera flash in the center circle (right in the kick-off spot) while taking free-kicks, goal-kicks..etc (probably just a low details thing?)

8. Keepers stand for a second too long then decides to fall and catch the ball when the ball is loose and it’s near the keeper’s feet.

9. Fans don’t wear the colours of the team.

10. The weird-looking line on the pitch is still there and did not get fixed.

11. You can’t choose the functions of each button but you’re limited to the given sets of functions for each button (can only select Classic and New).

12. The “Call 2nd Player” button is the same as the Pass button. Very awkward and hard to use.

13. Chip/Lob Shot and Finesse Shot have switched buttons, but not their whole “set” (eg: the high through-pass is still with L1). It’s bad because it doesn’t make sense ("lifted" passes/shots should be with the same "modifier").

14. Menus (like FIFA 07) are still slow on Windows Vista.

15. Menus overall look exactly the same like FIFA 07 (for a PC game, it’s very limited or console-like making no use of high screen resolution).

16. No visual/popups changes from FIFA 07 (score graphics, clock, in-game pop-ups..etc are either exactly the same or have changed by very little).

17. Not much graphical change. No not “next-gen” graphics. But not even better looking pitch textures (although they got the colour right this time).

18. Manchester United is overrated (even roughly speaking, there’s no way Barcelona and Manchester United can have the same 4.5 rating). Whether it’s a different ratings system or not, it shouldn’t matter.

19. Game Speed is very fast (arcadey). Changing it to “Slow” speed make the entire game slow (including the ball) but it’s already floating in the air as it is. Players should be slower and the ball should be faster/heavier.

Good --nice additions to the game, makes the game more fun to play.
1. More stats like through passes, long passes, short passes.

2. Commentator uses players’ names more often in more sentences. Also says the keeper’s name!!

3. You can change controller colours (thank you)

4. Keepers come out earlier to close the angle.

5. Right-stick switching to switch to a better defender than what the normal way gives you.

6. Players cover more spaces on the pitch, and I’ve played for a long time now but it seems that you don’t run into those situations where you see like 6 defenders running after one guy.

7. Aiming is harder.

8. Player animations look a bit better and (even though it’s still there) the number of cases where the ball just bounces off many players has been reduced (players use their legs to control the ball better even if it’s not on the ground).

9. The AI attacks differently now and finds better spaces. Unfortunately this is pretty much true for all difficulty levels so the AI is just as smart on Semi-Pro as it is on Legendary. Just, as I said before, does it faster and have more advantage because my players are worse now = unrealistic.

Excellent --each one of these items add much more fun playing hours to the game by themselves
1. Goalkeeper control changes lots of things and can be used in many cases especially one-on-one. It’s much more fun to control the goalie and jump on the player and playing against human players will be much more fun since you can approach that striker in so many different ways now. Also very useful for positioning the goalie on free kicks and corner kicks and hopefully reduces the number of “easy goals”.

2. CPU players do skill moves and fake shots. Really cool and makes the CPU much harder to defend against. It’s also player-based, so Ronaldinho does more flashy skill moves than others for example.

3. Players are more free to move wherever you want them to go. They’re not just locked following the ball for example and you don’t have to use the Cancel button even if you want to make your player change direction a bit.

4. Players are more responsive and faster to “control”. Momentum is still there, but switching between players or trying to receive a pass won’t take a long time to make that player move himself from one spot to another, which makes the game less frustrating.

5. Custom Formations (with attacking/defending runs) will make the game much more fun and less “scripted” in terms of where your players would be. It also lets you make the most out of your team.

6. Full match-length replays that don’t get cut when you sub a player for example and lose this beautiful goal you scored. The ability to save a replay for the entire match is really cool –although I don’t think you can upload the entire match but just the 10-second piece right?

Overall:

FIFA 08 is a very good game, don't get me wrong. If you've never played FIFA (or at least for a while now) then FIFA 08 should be great for you. But to me, this is more like a "patched" FIFA 07 than a new game --and yes I do know that there more changes other than gameplay changes or whatever we could see from the demo.

There are many "bad" things in the game that were in FIFA 07 or even FIFA 06 ... Surely they've had time to fix those having been pointed out by us so many times? ... or surely it wouldn't hurt the development time if they spent a bit of time making different-looking popups and scoreboard not just change the colours (heck the scoreboard is exactly the same) --popup patches are available for PC users and they don't take much time to make (compared to how much time they had to make the game).

I've read some say "well Konami doesn't change much visually yet many people like it" ... but who cares? ... if Konami adds laser guns to PES will you copy that as well? Raise Eyebrow

These things I listed above may look very minor or it's like me being very picky, but these things would've made the game feel so much different than just the same old game. I really hope there are more stuff that will make the game more fun to play (or give me a reason to play it), because strictly looking at the gameplay, it's not much of a reason.

This is FIFA 07 1.1 or something, not FIFA 08.

If you disagree/agree, feel free to post here + your thoughts why you disagree/agree.

My PC demo doesn't work. Just freezes on a black screen.

Oh and Fifa > Pro Evo

If I wanted realism, I go out and play proper football.

What a stupid comment.

So when you play a game like Metal Gear would you prefer it to be unrealistic so you can say "If I wanted realism I would go out start killing real soldiers..."

When I want realism, I curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep.

Games can't do that, can they?

Fifa 08 for the 360 is probablly more realistic than pro evo has ever been. The demo is fantastic. Deciding which is more fun will be the problem i think.

Both football games will be worth of playing.

...but we didn't played new PES, right ? We don't know what Konami will add to already brilliant gameplay.

Can't wait for new PES demo.

There probs won't be a PES demo...there wasn't last year until after release.

So is the demo worth a download then?

If it's anything like last years attempt the answers then I won't bother.

Err.. the concept of shooting and killing people is pretty unrealistic for most people. The concept of playing football is realistic.

Some people seem to think that playing Pro Evo somehow makes them cooler. They seem to forget it's just a computer game.

Definitely. It gets annoying because you only get to play 4 minute halves, but it's worth it just to get a feel of the game. It'll give you a good enough indication of whether you want to buy the game or not.

This is assuming your talking about the 360/ps3 demo. The pc version is a pile of wank.

It's still the same thing - game vs reality. The more realistic games are getting the more the gap between the two is getting smaller. I'm pretty sure everyone here would choose the realistic game against the unrealistic one a lot of the time. I know I would.

Very very dissapointed with the demo. I downloaded it for the PS3 and found it frustratingly hard to control. I'm a seasoned pro at Fifa and PES but in 6 halves (The demo is only for 1 half!) I scored only 1 goal (Tevez tap in!).

I can't see how anybody can say its brilliant. Its ok just not what i hoped.

Bring on PES!

I'd read about this on evo-web and loads of people were raving about it so thought I'd give it a try. First impressions were that it was utter shite as usual, tried a couple more games tonight and my opinion improved to mediocre, it just isn't very good.

There seems to be no difference between players, they all seem to pass, dribble, run, shoot, control etc exactly the same, no matter if its someone shite or not. And considering one of the pluses is supposedly the graphics, they are horrendous in places, the players faces are appalling and all the players look like they've been on the Jan Molby diet. Not impressed at all.

I was impressed to begin with, the 'in menu' practise mode is pretty cool, but it turns out that it's more fun that the matches themselves! Very dodgy gameplay as usual, it's actually feels worse to play than the FIFA's of 3/4 years ago.

Pro Evo will piss all over this.

Plus, where's the commentary? Wasn't it ready in time for the demo?
