Fergies post-match comments

"We certainly controlled the match. But I felt that when we didn't finish them off in the first half, like I felt we should have done, it always gives the other team hope. The one thing about Peter Reid teams is that they will always battle on, they've always got the perseverance to keep going and going. Perseverance is a good quality to have in a situation like that."

Finishing the game off

"Without them actually creating anything they were always in the game at 1-0 - and of course they scored. We stepped up our game after that and we should have still won it but there were a lot of opportunities missed."

Possession

"I think we showed great control of the match, the passing was great at times - in particular the first twenty-five minutes. We could have been three or four up. I think it's a difficult place to come to, escpecially with the fight that you expect. I look at the league this year and I see teams with great commitment to try and get results. I think it's going to be a tough league."

Refereeing decisions

"The referee is there to control the match. I felt that he didn't do that well. But in that situation you have got to handle it, and we are capable of handling it."

Keane's red card

"The tackle on Roy was a bad one, we've seen it on television and the referee should have acted on that. And then of course Roy lost his temper - but I looked at that incident as well, and it's innocuous as far as I'm concerned. He's definitely put his hand across the boy's face, there is no question about that, but he's not swung an elbow at him, it's nothing like that."

Right to appeal

"He's (Keane) been sent off for an elbow, the referee has indicated that it was an elbow - which is not the case. So we really will have to review that very very closely and decide whether to appeal or not.

"He will get incredible headlines about it just because it is Roy. He'll be crucified by the press, we expect that. But when you look at it, I've seen so many incidents in the game that have been far worse than that. In fact the tackle by McAteer was worse than that. Roy certainly put his arm across his face, that was all."

Roy's disappointment

"He's disappointed with the referee. He's disappointed with McAteer's quick response. He went down as if he'd been shot in the back of the head. But that's an unfortunate part of football nowadays."

Injury update

"Nicky Butt did a bit of jogging yesterday and hopefully he'll be ok for Tuesday - we certainly hope so because we have five or six injuries at the moment. But they'll all come back fairly quickly. Gary Neville played in a reserve game on Thursday, he's coming on quite well and should be back in a couple of weeks' time. Mikael came off with a neck injury in the first half. Three or four days from now and he will be fine."

Keane's injury situation

"Roy had bother with his hip last season. I wanted him to take the summer off and have an operation at the time, but we decided not to do it. It's a situation we are taking game by game. He felt ok today. The injury could come back we don't know. We're keeping our eye on it."

Under media scrutiny

"That's what happens when you are the biggest."

Glad to see him support Roy publically, just as long as he gives him a bit of verbal slappage in private. Saying that I think even we will struggle to call that innocuous... thoroughly provoked is the best "defence" you can offer... and not nearly as hard as the Scouser deserved!

Disappointed with Trigs reaction, come on Roy, you elbowed him in the head, did you want him to laugh. You cant commit a 'red-card' offence so cynically and expect someone who you dont like to try and help you

Agreed. Absolutely true. However bear in mind that from Ferguson's angle it might not have been clear. At least he didn't do a Wanker and say "I didn't see it".

Chewing off Keano's head in private will be enough for the rest of the season at least, anyway. Keano always gets sent off at least once a year.
