From the Mirror:
SIR ALEX Ferguson is involved in an angry feud with Manchester United's own TV station after it broadcast withering criticism of his team.

Fergie was furious when MUTV interviewed Old Trafford legend Stuart Pearson after the recent 3-1 defeat by Manchester City.

Pearson launched a bitter attack on the club's derby-day disaster. He said: "I don't think I've seen a performance as bad as that for a long time - if I've ever seen one that bad before from a Manchester United team.

"Alex has got a lot to answer for.''

Ferguson was so upset by MUTV carrying the outspoken comments, he is considering banning the channel from talking to United's stars.

His belief that MUTV was the one channel he and his players could trust has been destroyed.

The channel also broadcast Pearson's stinging criticism of Juan Sebastian Veron, when he said during a phone-in: "To spend £28million on a midfielder when we needed other departments strengthening, I think, was a mistake.

"We should try and get our money back and sell him because I don't think he's good enough to be a Manchester United player when we have everybody fit.'' Club officials are trying to solve the embarrassing rift before the weekend so MUTV can continue interviewing Old Trafford stars for its 70,000 subscribers, although it is unlikely Pearson will ever again appear on the channel.

MUTV was first broadcast in 1998. United were the first club to have its own dedicated station broadcasting to the world.

The six hours programming per day includes live, half-hour bulletins in which MUTV staff are allowed access to all aspects of the club, from coverage of the ladies team to all of their Premiership matches.

The row is the latest in a series of run-ins between Fergie, the media, and even shareholders in the club - heightened by some poor league results.

Only last Friday the manager came under fire at United's annual meeting when a shareholder said he should have quit when he promised last summer, and taken Veron with him. The BBC's John Motson was also subjected to a Fergie walkout when he had inquired about United captain Roy Keane being sent off three times in 14 games.

"You're out of order...right, that's the interview finished,'' stormed Fergie.

"I don't want to f***ing watch it. Cancel it. F***ing make sure that does not go out.''"

I'm surprised it didn't also mention his 'own' newsletter that is sent out, as it has far more stinging criticism by the fans in it. To pick on Pearson is unfair, most ex-players and managers on it have said similar or implied similar, and even Clayton Blackmore, who's a staunch defender, accepts the need for a 4th striker, that our squad isn't what it was and that Veron struggles in the Premiership. I suppose ex-players like Pearson are just ABU's though, and will be treated like Kidd and Schmeichel...

Yeah, why don't you have a channel that only tells people the good stuff thats going on, I mean, god forbid someone actually doesn't agree with Fergie....

If that threat is carried out, we should be able to ask for our money back and cancel our subscriptions - half the programming is player interviews! What they gonna do next, edit the phone-ins? They've been much harsher.

Send Pearson to the Gulag.......

;)

If Mutv ban Pearson I for one will cancel my subscription to the program. I suggest you all email mutv@mutv.com and threaten the same.

When on earth was that?

Anyhow, I don't see why people jump on the bandwagon here. We are all so quick to dismiss Mirror and Sun stories when we like it, so why not now?

Fergie Threatens To Ban MUTV

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you !!

What is wrong with SAF that he reacts so violently to criticism. It's well known how he has behaved in the past, not talking to the BBC/SKY/various newspapers/journalists.It's as though he wants to intimidate everyone in the media so they won't be anything other than sycophantically sucking up to him and Man Utd and clamping down completely on any criticism, however valid.Well,I think he is a bully and got a real personality disorder here (Freud would have a field day with him).

Well,it goes with the territory. The flipside of all the triumphalism and plaudits he's enjoyed over the last few years is that when things go wrong ,you have to take the criticism on the chin.He and Saddam Hussein have a lot in common.

Pearson - Voice of the people, get rid of Veron thats what he says, what does he know?

Any of you scousers remember what a terrific goal Pearson scored against you in the 77 cup final

You were on for the treble that year, something you've never been able to repeat

;)

Stuart Pearson should be able to say what he thinks, same as anyone else is.

From the MEN:
SIR Alex Ferguson imposed a ban on Manchester United's own MUTV television channel following criticism on air from former Red Stuart Pearson.

The United boss was angry over the ex-Old Trafford striker's comments after the Maine Road derby defeat.

Pearson was on a post-match phone-in on MUTV following the 3-1 derby loss.

Among Pearson's observations were: "Sir Alex is not getting it right in team selection or tactics. He has a lot to answer for."

Ferguson countered by refusing his usual pre-match interview with the channel before the West Ham match and also after the game at Upton Park.

The Reds' boss did, however, let his players continue speaking to MUTV and it's Ferguson will be back on air for Saturday's match against Newcastle.

“It is all just a storm in a teacup and there is no problem with MUTV. The manager will be talking to them again as normal before this weekend’s match against Newcastle"

Doesn't mention if Pearson will be allowed back on.

Looks like desperation has well and truly set in. Fergie is preparing for another, perhaps final siege, in which freedom of expression is the first casualty. This, together with other recent pronouncments, looks more and more like "the beginning of the end", to quote WSC.

Thank god for that ! I just wonder how the Club is going to handle SAF from now on, particularly his stated intention to maybe stay on and build another side. Who's going to have the nerve to tell him that perhaps that doesn't fit in with the Club's vision of things going forward ?

i agree. fergie has done this kind of thing before with the press.. i think he may have snapped again because he really doesn't like people criticizing him.. that's why he always tells his players not to read into what the media says too much..

it's probably worse this time because his own fans are criticizing him..

I hope it's true that Stuart hasn't been banned. I'll be interested to see how many more times he appears on MUTV this season. His appearances have already been drastically cut back from last season...I suspect because of his honesty, which is a shame.

I think MUTV has to decide if they want call-in shows or not. If they do, they have to accept the fact that fans will be highly critical of the team after a series of poor performances and rightfully so. And given that, it would be ludicrous and unfair to expect their expert guests to sit there like puppets blindly defending Fergie and the team. Their "expert" guests would lose all credibility.

MUTV's alternative is to eliminate the call-in shows from their schedule and just show old matches and interviews with players. I would prefer they do that than censor their call-in shows. Some of the media here already jokingly call MUTV "Pravda". I'd hate for there to be more than an element of truth in that.
