Fergie speaks about Transfers on ManUtd.com

Fergie's View: Sunderland preview 30/12/02 1:10 PM

Sir Alex Ferguson has said that United will probably not be venturing into the transfer market once the trading window opens up on New Years Day.

The manager is also looking forward to the visit of Sunderland to Old Trafford on the first day of 2003, and he's expecting a tough match from a team who are at the wrong end of the Premiership table.

Here's what he told the press on Monday afternoon:

Transfer window

"I haven't given it any thought, it's so difficult to get the players you want. This happens every year, people ask who we're after - particularly with the European window - and I have nothing to say on it. I don't know what other clubs are doing, but it's obvious that there's a big reduction in money available - not necessarily from Manchester United but certainly from the other clubs in Europe."

Birmingham game

"It was a very good performance, we could have scored a lot more but they were two excellently-taken goals. We could have had six, seven or eight. Paul Scholes had one of those unlucky days where the ball kept falling under his feet, shots were blocked - he could have scored a lot of goals."

Diego Forlan

"He enjoys scoring. He's now starting to put a notch in the scoring machine, I think that was his eighth on Saturday. I'm very pleased for the boy, as he does try and that's a great quality to have."

Beckham's chip

"It was a marvellously executed goal, and it was his decision to chip the goalie. I thought he should have gone in, to be honest with you. The keeper made a mess of it - he should have saved it really. But it was marvellously executed. The courage to do that is important. If he'd have failed, a few of the lads would have been unhappy!"

Good performance

"The whole team showed a good appetite to play, I was very happy with that. Birmingham were short of one or two players, but the one thing they're not short of is guts and courage. That runs right through their team, they work their socks off, challenge for every ball. Morrison is a real handful in the physical nature of his game. That makes it hard for centre-backs to deal with him."

Roy Keane's return

"He's done exceptionally well. He played a full game at Middlesbrough and a full game against Birmingham - that's remarkable after being out for four months and putting in performances like that. It usually takes six or seven matches to get fully match-fit."

Sunderland match

"You've got to expect them to battle - that's what every team down at the bottom of the League will do. It's part of the game, and most teams come to Old Trafford wanting to do well. They'll run their socks off because we are United. Sometimes with teams at the bottom of the League there's a desperation to get a point. From now to the end of the season it's going to be nerve-wracking for them. There's pressure at the top but there's incredible pressure at the bottom.

"They'll play the way that Howard's teams have always played. Set-piece play is something that we'll have to guard against. I know they do a lot of work on throw-ins, corners. They'll be determined, they'll play the ball forward a lot and they'll show great energy."

Liverpool hard done by

"Liverpool must be raging at the decision for the penalty kick. Gerard is getting a lot of criticism from the press, but there's nothing the manager can do when you get decisions like that. Liverpool were going to win the match, as they seemed to have Arsenal bottled up. It was a very tight game, and I think you'll get a lot of that type of match."

New Year message to supporters

"We thank them for their support, as the volume at Old Trafford has been turned up this season. We're getting fantastic support in all the games. We want to do well for them, as they've always stuck by me and the team, and we want to repay them."

Sir Alex Ferguson was talking to Manchester United Radio 1413AM, who will broadcast match build-up and commentary between 10:30 and 17:30 on New Years Day. E-mail Matt.Proctor@ManUtd.co.uk with all your requests and dedications.
