new signings by start of season - from teamtalk:

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident he will be making new signing for United this summer but is giving no clues on his targets.
The Reds boss has confirmed he is definitely in the market for at least two star names and while he refuses to reveal any identities, he is adamant they will be in his squad by the start of the season.
Ferguson refuses to be drawn on speculation surrounding any particular player but says he will be bringing in new blood.
So far this summer United have been linked with many big names including Leeds star Rio Ferdinand, Alessandro Nesta and Hernan Crespo of Lazio, Juventus' Lilian Thuram, Damien Duff of Blackburn Rovers, Javier Zanetti of Inter Milan and West Ham's David James.

Sir Alex Ferguson is backing his United team to shake off the disappointment of last season and bounce back even stronger.
United ended last season without a trophy for the first time since 1998 and Ferguson acknowledges that individual mistakes effectively gift-wrapped the Premiership title to eventual winners Arsenal.
Ferguson is set make his first foray into the transfer market imminently and knows that his defence is the one area he must strengthen.
He said: "Individual errors cost us. The confidence of players was knocked and that doesn't do anything for team morale.
"This is an area we're looking at. We need consistency and we're going to work hard to get it."
Ferguson recognises the challenge United face in retaining their stranglehold on domestic honours but says his players will be fired up for the new campaign.
He added: "I'm really looking forward to the start of the new season. The disappointment of last year will have a positive effect and give us the fighting spirit that is synonymous with Manchester United and the players we have here.
"What we've achieved here in the last 11 years is phenomenal and I want to emulate that. Finishing third last season was the first time in 10 years that we've finished outside the top two.
"This alone will give the lads the drive they need," he told the Daily Mail.

We only need one player. A decent center half will do nicely. Christ if we cant find cover for full back we ought to give up.

With the amount of attacking flair we posses we shouldnt need any defenders (hang on, maybe I'm on to something there! <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" /> )

It isn't the first time master yoda. ;)

I don't have biasness against someone just because they happen to be scousers as long as what they say sounds sensible to me.

Which begs the question: how do you live with yourself lchk????

Theres a new news item on TT with quotes from Fergie about Rio and signings in general.

Not too positive to be honest. He mentions dissapointment that nothing has happened yet.

:(

So basically on the day we were supposed to make some big announcement (again) the only decent transfer news is that Leeds and the dippers have agreed 9 Million for Bowyer----- Great!

Nice to see our nastiest rivals strenghtening even further in their weakest area while we discuss how to make a back 4 out of what we have already.

Oh well. Theres always hope.

MEN:
SIR Alex Ferguson has admitted he is getting "a bit edgy" about Manchester United's inactivity in the transfer market.

With five weeks to go before the Premiership opener against West Brom, the Reds have yet to add to a squad which ended last season trophy-less for the first time in four seasons.

But Fergie has promised the fans - also getting restless as United's rivals continue their reinforcement - that there will be new faces, hopefully including Rio Ferdinand, ahead of the big kick off.

Out of contract Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, Ronnie Wallwork and Raimond van der Gouw have left the club but the first team numbers have yet to balance out with incoming business.

But Fergie has calmed the fears that the deposed champions will enter the new campaign against West Bromwich Albion five weeks tomorrow with a weakened senior squad.

"It has been disappointing that we haven't secured anyone yet and I am getting a bit edgy," he says. "But it won't be the case that we will go into the season with less players in the squad. We will have new players in place."

No1 Target

United's major target is Leeds' England defender Ferdinand.

But with new Elland Road boss Terry Venables awaiting the 23-year-old's return from his summer break a potential swoop remains locked in stalemate.

"The Rio Ferdinand thing is an issue and we are waiting on things developing at the moment," Ferguson adds.

"It is not our job to antagonise people and there'll be no war of words but Leeds have said themselves that we are the club that has talked to them about Rio so it is no secret. If he's available then we'd be interested. But it is not clear-cut.

"We will work away and we have alternatives and other thoughts.

"We are short in defence because we have lost three senior squad defenders from last season. When you lose the likes of Denis Irwin and Ronny Johnsen you are losing a lot of experience there.

"We haven't drawn up a big list of potential targets. You don't do that when you are trying to achieve what we are trying to achieve.

"With the quality and type of player we want to bring to the club you only have a list of four or five players who are operating at the highest level who you feel would could come here and enhance the team."

Ferguson admits that the World Cup hasn't helped United's summer transfer ambitions. Ferdinand was identified as a major priority before the finals in Japan and South Korea and the Reds had asked Leeds in May about his availability but his success on the top stage alerted other buyers and also pushed the price up.

But Ferdinand wasn't the only Red target to enhance his reputation in the Far East.

Blackburn midfielder-cum-forward Damien Duff has also been linked with the Reds and had a good tournament for Ireland.

"The World Cup beat us because two or three players emerged over there who we had made enquiries for before the World Cup started," admitted Fergie.

That'll teach us for not making any signings until after the World Cup.

I'm wondering who the two or three players were, Rio and Duff presumably are two, but what about the third?

It was probably Rustu I suppose, damn shame he's decided to stay in order to get a signing on bonus when he does move.

We can take it from the interview that the short list is very short.
I reckon its Rio, Duff and Finnan (or another full back).
Straight replacements for Johnsen, Yorke/Sheringham/Cole and Irwin.
Put it this way, I can't see us trying to rebuild the entire back four/five. And I can't see us pricking around with 4-5-1 again.

As said, Rustu. But I think Ronaldinho comes under that too.

Apologies Neil, I didn't see your posting of the article in this thread.

What "developments" is Fergie talking about? Leeds have basically said hands off Rio and the player himself has never indicated that he wants to jump ship.

We're not doing very well then since Rustu, Ronaldinho, and to some extent Rio, have all said they are staying put.

You should take a look at what they are talking about your favourite defender Brown in the O'Shea thread.

You might not like it ;)

Has it ever crossed your mind that you have to open a thread and read the postings to see if there are any duplicates?

I didn't.

So sue me

Why so defensive.

Are you going to answer the question that everyone seems to be asking you ? You said that you would've expected LFC to sign a big name winger.

Who did you have in mind ?

fergie said that things were more complicated than they seemed...i think this means that we, the general public, don't know exactly what is going on with the talks and who is talking with who...
it's a breath of fresh air to hear some quotes and to actually get some 'real' information...

Yes it is.

Shame that information is not very reassuring.

Hearing the words of Fergie "getting a bit edgy" is not exactly a breath of fresh air and not the least bit reassuring.

Or you can take an angle I've seen printed today somewhere, that Fergie is suggesting to Rio 'Look, I haven't got all day. If you want to go to United, go tell Leeds you're off NOW'.

Point taken - one breath of "fresh air" was that Fergie mentioned he would be assessing other targets as well in addition to Rio. At least he's not putting all his eggs in one basket.

People who do that risk eating scrambled eggs at the end of the season instead of zipping Champaqne from golden trophies.
