Sir Alex Ferguson wants Denis Irwin to stay on at Manchester United as a coach.
The the 35-year-old played his last game for the Old Trafford club against Charlton on the last day of the season after 12 years service.
Ferguson refused to offer him a further one-year contract, but insists he would be happy to have the former Republic of Ireland defender on his coaching staff.
He said: "I have spoken to Denis in the past about coaching but he has never been interested.
"I always tell players at his age that they should go out and get their coaching badges. Once you go out of the game you'll feel the draught and you might start reconsidering.
"There are always opportunities here because we are forever developing the club. We have a lot of coaches working for us now. If Denis does want to take his badges and change his mind then he knows where to come."
