ALEX FERGUSON is preparing finally to land Marcelo Salas.

The Manchester United boss is set to make yet another attempt to sign his one-time target who is out of favour at Juventus.

Fergie sent his brother Martin, United's top scout, to watch the Chilean star for the Italians at Chievo last night.

But the journey to Verona was a wasted one as Salas, 28, could not even make his team's bench, while most of the fans were unable to see the action as it was so foggy.

Ferguson is keen on strengthening in the strikers' department as he prepares an all-out assault on Arsenal, who remain five points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Hitman Salas has snubbed United on a few occasions and, most recently, joined Juve for £8.3million from Lazio 18 months ago.

But he has so far failed to impress in Turin.

He has another 3½ years of his contract to run but would be available for about £3m.

Lippi: Salas staying put

MARCELLO LIPPI has denied that his Juventus striker Marcelo Salas is set for a move to Old Trafford, after Manchester United scouts were present for the game against Chievo.
Salas has become a peripheral figure at the Turin club, with the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, Marco Di Vaio and the weekend's hat-trick hero David Trezeguet all ahead in the striking pecking order.
The Chilean striker is not pleased to have been phased out of the starting line-up, but Lippi insists that the club are not looking to offload a player that could prove vital if injuries mount at Stadio Delle Alpi.
"Salas will not be leaving," insisted the former Inter coach.
"We have a squad of 26 players and we are happy with it.
"I do not think that any players will be leaving or arriving in January."
United are in the market for a striker, although they have also insisted they will not be splashing the cash during this winter transfer window.
Salas has been linked to The Red Devils several times through his career, and Sir Alex Ferguson is a fan of the striker, but it seems unlikely that there will be any move for the Juventus player.

Ok, that seems to have cleared it up!
