FERGIE WANTS NEW STRIKER
By Simon Stone, PA Sport

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he could plunge into the transfer market for a new striker before the end of the month.

Ferguson confirmed he was looking to the Champions League deadline of August 31 to bring in a new face following the cut-price £2million departure of Dwight Yorke to Blackburn.

However, he flatly denied that West Ham's Paolo di Canio was on his wanted list after his initial move for the Italian fell through last season because of Yorke's refusal to leave Old Trafford.

"We would like to have four strikers," said Ferguson, who confirmed he would not have to sell before setting his target.

"We have always worked on that basis so it's possible we could bring someone in.

"We have a deadline of August 8 for the qualifying stage of the Champions League and August 31 for the main competition.

"We do not have a lot of time until next Wednesday but hopefully, if we get through the first stage, we will use August 31."

It had been strongly suggested that West Ham were awaiting a bid from United for their maverick 34-year-old by the end of the week.

However, that has so far failed to materialise and Ferguson was fairly unequivocal when he was asked whether his interest would be renewed.

"He will not be the next one," said the Scot.

Ferguson was speaking ahead of the prestigious four-team Amsterdam tournament, which will see his side pitted against hosts Ajax on Friday and Italian outfit Parma on Sunday evening.

While the prize of becoming the first English team to win the sell-out event is an enticing one, the main reason for United taking part is to sharpen themselves up for the start of a campaign which will begin with a trip to either Hungary or Croatia in two weeks time.

Hungarian unknowns Zalaegerszek, who take a 1-0 advantage into their second leg against Croatia's NK Zargeb next week but Ferguson feels his side will be better prepared than they were at the same stage last term, even if his quintet of England World Cup men might be slightly behind in their preparation.

"We have taken a bit of a gamble with them," he admitted.

"They only arrived here on Thursday and we will probably only give them half a game against Ajax.

"I need to have a team in my mind for the first leg but at least our pre-season programme is better than the last one."

Twelve months ago, United headed to the Far East, mainly as a marketing exercise because of their huge following in the region.

Although that part of the trip proved worthwhile, it was less beneficial to the players, who were physically drained for the start of the season.

"There is no comparison really," said Ferguson.

"The Far East trip was done because we have a huge fan base there. This is a tournament of real significance against very good teams with excellent players."

Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed the hope he would be fit for Friday's opener after playing a full part in training on Thursday despite his recent shin problem.

It is thought however, he may sit the match out as Ferguson refuses to take any chances on his star men.

In any case, Ferguson will want to have another look at Uruguayan frontman Diego Forlan, whose form has improved dramatically following an encouraging World Cup campaign.

The £7million man failed to find the net for United last term but has scored in two friendly outings so far and Ferguson has also predicted a great future for the South American.

Ajax have promised to field a full strength side as they defend the trophy they won for the first time last year.

Ironically, they are the only competing team to have automatically qualified for the Champions League after completing a Dutch double last term.

Victor Sikora will look to give Fulham a reminder of what they missed when he opted for the Amsterdam ArenA ahead of Loftus Road and coach Ronald Koeman admitted Friday's game would mean more to his side than their visitors.

"We are all preparing for a new season, so it will be a good guide to where we are," he said.

"But it has to be more more important for us because we are in front of our own fans."

It not Di canio, who will it be perhaps a raid on Crisis Club Fiorentina for Nuno Gomes

forget gomes, hes rubbish

we should be looking at chiesa

Chiesa? Has he got over his injury yet?

Seems more likely to be Lopez or Crespo who we've been continuously linked to for ages now.

This has blown the validity of Boring's news right out of the water hasn't it? We haven't got long to get rid of Barthez either. He must be feeling had.

Lopez and Crespo I would imagine to be too expensive.

We've just said no about Duff too, so it won't be him.

Was it Lopez who got the assist against liverpool? :D

A deal can look likely, and still fall through, you just don't know. Lopez might not be too expensive if the stam money was part of it.

Perhaps so, and that being the case you wouldn't announce as exclusive news the fact that Barthez won't be with us at the start of the season and Di Canio will be a red by the end of the week. It makes one look foolish in my opinion.

I'm not sure I would want Lopez, I dunno whether he'd be happy playing a lot less than he has done at Valencia and Lazio (although I suspect he played no more than 25 games a season there). If he is, then my only reservation is his Andy Cole like characteristic of needed quite a few chances before putting one away. Lopez isn't a youngster like Forlan - it's part of his game - needing the chances I mean.

like Emile Heskey then :D

If he leads to victories against Liverpool then he's worth it! ;)

Some other things from what he said are that he's obviously changed his mind about Di Canio, since he wanted him 6 months ago, why not now? Has someone else become available? He hints that things are already under way but still some way to go because he says we'll hopefully have someone in by end of august. We've not had a serious link to any other striker in the last few weeks so it has to be the Lazio strikers. Bloody good news is that he still thinks we need 4 strikers, to which we can all breathe a big sigh of relief.

Maybe it will be a shock signing

Kenyon said he want to sign British Player a couple of weeks ago maybe it will Matt Jansen or Malcolm Christie

now that di canio is out of the way, maybe it is Duff, or maybe even ronaldhino, as they are versatile players, like the ones livershite and the arse have got.

as they both can cover both wings, central midfield, in the hole and as strikers.
With Ronaldhino being the deadliest in the box, with his pace.

maybe even Cisse, as auxere have recently just bought a 25 year old striker.

but I am happy that fergie has contradicted kenyon, that tells us kenyon is just using politics, and because he has flatly denied Duff that means he does not want the Rio situation repeating itself (the price shooting up sky high), it also has parallels to the Rio case where it was initially flaty denied.

if it's not duff, then we are only left with 3 players thta we have been linked to, crespo, lopez, ronaldhino.

lopez would be cheap and pacey, ronaldhino would be the best as he is more versatile, crespo, is too similar to ruud and ole, maybe get crespo for a year and then trade him with cisse, or ronaldo.

Does it have to be someone we've been linked to?

I can't see us spending too much, this player is gonna be a backup/rotation striker at the end of the day. I expect someone who's either 'old', with experience or relatively unknown, for under £5m.

if he was gonna be old? Why did we not go for rivaldo or di canio, both perfect for the linkup role.

ithink fergie wants to take maximum advantage of the football world's financial situation, and pick up young up and coming players for the right price.

duff, ronaldhino, gudjohnson would have to accept being roateted at ateam fighting for 3 major honours.

i'll laugh if it duff, with blythy going out of his/her way to announce it's definately not duff. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

do you have some insider information, like EBM????? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> ;)

it will be an old guy or a young guy. Ole and Ruud is our number one partnership I think. Forlan isnt ready yet, he will be our bench warmer. The last guy will be used for rotation.

If its a young guy (which I doubt) then we'd still be slightly thin up front due to inexperience.

If its a world class star to take the no. 9 shirt, I feel sorry for Ole. No player in their prime will come to sit on the bench.

I reckon the most logical plan is to get an older striker fo this year, then get a youngster next year when we have the funds (Ronaldinho, Duff, Cisse etc). Veron is staying unless theres a dramaic turn of events i.e he complains again so ignore this continued anti-Veron campaign. Lazio should shut the Hell up.

I have imagined that the talk of Crespo is crap because it would depend on a swap with seba, who i am increasingly convinced will stay. But given the financial chaos engulfing Lazio and the very real prospect of relegation, is it just possible that they are offering Crespo to pay the Stam debt? In which case we pick him up for 10 mill effectively. This would fit with Kenyons statement that no more dosh will be spent as effectively this would not be seen as a new outlay.

I hope it's Duff ... but I touched my heart and well I have to say it - very unlikely this round ...

For me it won't be any BIG star !! ... I think he who comes in will at most cost in the region of 5mil ... Don ask me WHERE to get a good 5mil rated striker ... I hope Fergie could work wonder on that but yes, frankly speaking I believe 5mil is the MAX we could expect from the PLC pocket for our 3rd or 4th striker ....

I really hope its Duff but it is almost impossible.
If we dont signhim and goes to Liverpool this year or the next we will regret it.
:(

I think Matt Jansen would be an excellent addition to the team - holds the ball up well, good skills, scores with both feet, great vision, English, great attitude, reasonably young (25?), versatile, not too expensive - $9 - 10 million pounds. This is more likely since Yorke and Cole would probably be first choice strikers and Jansen wont be too happy on the bench. He is a superb candidate to play the withdrawn strikers role....I see some similarity with Sheringham. One problem we might have is the lack of pace upfront - so Lopez will be a good option to consider.

Matt Jansen would be great. I played with him a couple of years ago when he came over to the States. I think he was about 18 at the time, but he was fantastic. His father is a really great guy too.

We had some english team come over once to the club, i was too young to know any of the players.

How about Malcom Christie? He's a <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> fan.

I think we should sign Duff. Unlikely it may be but snatch it away from Liverpool will be great. :D

Fergie in for Iceman: The Mirror's back page hints on a £10million switch to Old Trafford for Chelsea's Icelandic hitman Eidur Gudjohnsen.
Life Verdict - *** Sir Alex Ferguson said on Thursday that he is after a striker - not Paolo di Canio - ahead of the Champions League deadline and Gudjohnsen could well fit the bill. Chelsea need the cash, but they would be loathed to sell to one of their biggest Premiership rivals.
