Sir Alex Ferguson is to ask Laurent Blanc to extend his one season stay at Old Trafford.
Ferguson has been impressed by a number of the Frenchman's recent displays.

Reports in England suggest that the Scot wants the 36-year-old to abandon his plans to retire from the game after just one season in the Premiership.

You couldn't get better centre-half displays anywhere in Europe in some of the games

Ferguson said: "I'm going to have a chat with Laurent but it will be his decision.

"He is mature enough and he has seen enough football to know whether or not he wants to continue. Hopefully he'll change his mind."

The Manchester United manager believes Blanc's current form has helped silence critics who felt France's World and European Cup winner was well past his sell-by date.

Blanc arrived at Old Trafford at the end of August last year as a direct replacement for Dutchman Jaap Stam.

Ferguson said: "The fact that he replaced Stam might have had something to do with the criticism he has received.

"He was an easy target because our form wasn't great at the time he arrived.

"He doesn't seem to be affected by the criticism.

"When you have great experience and confidence in yourself you can get through things.

"But he's a fantastic footballer. Some of his performances have been sublime.

"In fact, you couldn't get better centre-half displays anywhere in Europe in some of the games."

The United boss believes Blanc's vast experience will be crucial if his team are to navigate Spanish side Deportivo in the upcoming Champions League quarter-final.

"In terms of attacking Deportivo are the best side we have come across this season but I fancy us to get through," remarked Ferguson.
