Fergie, Wenger in Roma battle
Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are set to slug it out over Monaco's £5million-rated keeper Flavio Roma. Sport of the World has learned that Fergie was in the Stade de France last weekend to watch Roma help Monaco beat Sochaux 4-1 in the French League Cup final. And on Tuesday, he sent United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton to watch Roma play against Guingamp in the French First Division. Arsenal, who had a £4m bid for Roma knocked back during the January transfer window, also had a representative at the Guingamp match. Roma said: "I am aware that both Manchester United and Arsenal are interested in me. I know they have been following me for several months, although so far I haven't had any direct contact with either of them. To play for Arsenal or United would be a dream."
Never heard of him, any use? maybe Fab is off in the other direction hey? in any case Marseille have announced that they were offered Barthez.(follows)
United tried to offload Barthez to us
Sir Alex Ferguson has tried to dump misfit keeper Fabien Barthez to Marseille. After finally losing patience with his eccentric keeper, United boss Ferguson is desperate to get rid of the Frenchman following a series of high-profile calamaties and a dramatic loss of form this season. Manchester United approached Marseille - France's biggest club - who scoffed at the mere mention of having to pay Barthez's £2.5million-a-year wages. Marseille president Christophe Bouchet confirmed United had been in touch. He said: "There was an approach from United about Barthez. But we're not going to pursue it. We have an excellent keeper at Marseille in Vedran Runje. The communication with United took place this month. It was a direct approach at a high level."
