Weel ... I am obviously too young to know this ... 1967 Sir Bobby Charlton was 2nd in European Player of the Year award ( as reported by the latest Man Utd mag. ) ... piped to the award by Florian Albert from Ferencvaros ... gosh ... where's this club from anyone ? .. this really test me ...

TTR is right. They used to be a decent team in the 50s and 60s. They're the Jewish team from Budapest I think sort of Hungary's Ajax or Spurs.

Saw them play when my parents were in Budapest. They are terrible now, but back in the day, they were great. Hell, back in the day, Hungary were the greatest--too bad the Magic Magyars never won a WC.

hungary's 50's(?) team is widely regarded as the second greatest of all time.. behind brazil 70.

Don't know the history Im afraid.

We played them twice in '66 or '67 I think, and Albert scored against us at OT. He towered above Bill Foulkes who was centre half then (not a centre back)'. Without checking books, think they beat us over 2 matches in the old Inter Cities Fairs cup.

What was the name of that big bastard who played the old fashioned centre forward for Benfica? Anyone know?

Brazil 70 squeezed past England 1-0.

Hungary put 6 past us at Wembley and 7 in Budapest.

You mean Torres?

That's the bastard! many thanks.

May have something to do with the Diamond Merchants of Amsterdam who are mostly of the Jewish faith & invested in the club.
Vaguely remember reading about it in a football magazine..Think it was ..Charles Buchans Football Monthly....Anyone else remember this mag?
:D

Well, I think they also relied quite heavily upon Puskas and when he went down early in the game, Hungary was greatly hurt by that one.

MTK are the Jewish team from Budapest, not Ferencvaros. The latter played against Ajax a few years ago in the CL and during their home match some of their fans proved to be racist anti-semites.

Thanks mates ... really appreciate all the feedback ... you bunch ( and I think if the whole redcafe add up ) could really write a football encyclopedia titled "Redcafe Book of Football"
I hope at the same time you all have come to recall some old memories which is definitely fun ... too bad I can't really contribute to any of those :p

Were all well read about our history, not nec. that old!- (in my case anyway) :)
