You must be joking... Why buy a Dutch centerhalf for 10M when we've got Wes, O'Shea Silvestre and Rio? I say let's put our trust in these guys and spend our money on forwards and right/left backs...

what we need is to complement that at full-back to give us genuine defensive strength in depth.
And before you cry 4 out of 5 and perhaps even Rio given the chance can play full-back, it just isn't the same.
They are all quality defenders who can play out wide defensively, but what United really need is two genuine pacy attacking full-backs to add to our squad.</strong><hr></blockquote>
or maybe just one who can play either flank.

So true. Brown was amazing against Arsenal at CB. IMO, he's much better than Ferdinand. O'Shea at LB was also very impressive in the match. In fact, it might be too early to rate him as a LB, he looks to be more reliable than Silvestre. He was also very effective in going forward.

I also think that garry will remain as first choice RB unless he has a big dip in form. This leaves O'Shea and Brown fighting for one spot. But when we have them all available I think we will just see rotation occuring regularly with O'Shea and Brown possibly getting slightly fewer games than the rest. Of course we still need backup for the LB position no matter how well O'Shea has performed there.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Just as I see it, how often though do we have everyone fit? Its a squad game and we rotate the players, particularly picking them according to the opposition - nice to know we can deal with speed merchants like Owen and Henry and still keep clean sheets. Slower but trickier forwards like Zola might require Blanc.

I agree!

the only proven defensive line up IMO is Brown and Silvestre.. and they have done great jobs stopping liverpool and Arsenal..
i'd go with Ferdinand and Brown tho.. i don't think Silvestre is excellent in the air.. and i think that's where Rio has an edge.. Brown can do the dirty work.
we should keep O'Shea on RB.. he's too similar to Rio IMO. but it could work.. Bruce and Pallister worked.. so Rio and JOS could work too.

I don't see that we NEED back up at left back. We still have good ol' Phil remember :
RB: G. Neville/P.Neville/Brown
CB: Rio/Blanc/G. Neville
CB: Brown/O'Shea/Silvestre
LB: Silvestre/P.Neville/O'Shea
Plenty of options there really. IMO when Blanc retires next year, we look for someone who can be effective right across the back line (ala O'Shea) but is happy warming the bench as we are set for our future starters. This robably means we should forget about replacing Blanc with Mexes and go for Escude instead.

New United back line:
G.Neville-SUPERSTAR-Silvestre
We can play 3-5-2 with Maysie at the heart of our defence! <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" /> </strong><hr></blockquote>
comeone Maysie doesnt need those two hangers on cluttering up his territory either side of him.
Maysie on his own at the back <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

I think they played together before. Can't remember who for. Keep thinking it was Leeds but I'm sure it was at a successful club.

I wish that were the case but unfortunately when fergie buys big you can bet that player will be getting lots and lots of time regardless of the competition for his place...

Same as me. The Rio/Wes combo has the potential to be awesome. Of course if it doesn't work out I'd try Silvestre first with Rio, then with Brown and see which works the best.
I'd also bring in Mickey when the strikers we're playing against are speedsters like Thierry.
