i know everyone is saying o'shea will be the future partner for ferdinand in defenc ebut what about brown> he's definetely been playing as good as any defender in the team. what do u guys think?

I think we should buy Hofland.
I've been assuming that Rio / O'Shea is the partnership of the future but it really could be anyone from him, Gaz, Brown or Silvestre

I think the question should be who is Browns partner? Me, I think Mickey should.
O Shea at rb then Ferdinand and Brown at cb and Mickey at lb seems to be the best choices right now with Gary and Blanc giving experienced cover.

what we need is to complement that at full-back to give us genuine defensive strength in depth.
And before you cry 4 out of 5 and perhaps even Rio given the chance can play full-back, it just isn't the same.
They are all quality defenders who can play out wide defensively, but what United really need is two genuine pacy attacking full-backs to add to our squad.

or maybe just one who can play either flank.
For now at least, I say we stick with Brown and Silvestre. They've denied Arsenal and Liverpool, surely they deserve to keep the partnership?

I have to admit I was getting doubts about him, as his mistakes before he got injured seemed to unsettle him and make his play "jittery". he was obviously afraid of doing mistakes. But as long as he keeps his confidence and his head together, he's a feckin great player.

When everyone's fit he should partner Ricardo, Butt, Veron and Forlan. That's five for the bench. Brown and O'Shea as CBs.

i'd like to see Brown/Mickey continue for a while. We should play the best not just assume rio should be in there because he cost 30m.

Ferdinand's best partner at the moment is the bench.
I agree Weaste, the bench at the moment! or of recent times the treatment table! long term il say O'shea and Brown at RB, but thats interchangeable!
When Rio is fit he will play. Silvestre might be useful to switch to CB due to injuries or to counter a particualr team like we did against Arse but I think that Fergie sees him at LB most of the time. I also think that garry will remain as first choice RB unless he has a big dip in form. This leaves O'Shea and Brown fighting for one spot. But when we have them all available I think we will just see rotation occuring regularly with O'Shea and Brown possibly getting slightly fewer games than the rest. Of course we still need backup for the LB position no matter how well O'Shea has performed there.
Dont jump on conclusions about Rio. He is a world class player but you need time to settle down at OT, and its hard expecially when you are unfortunate enough to get injured every month.
Its obvious that Rio is struggling with Blanc. WHY? Because they are too similar. You cannot have 2 elegant gentlemen in the defense, one of them will suffer. I would opt for a stronger and faster partner for Rio, possible Silvestre ( my fav) Brown or O Shea

I don't see that we NEED back up at left back. We still have good ol' Phil remember

Plenty of options there really. IMO when Blanc retires next year, we look for someone who can be effective right across the back line (ala O'Shea) but is happy warming the bench as we are set for our future starters. This robably means we should forget about replacing Blanc with Mexes and go for Escude instead.

The most natural back line is Gary Rio Brown Micky, with O'shea who can backup any place at the back.
