VAR is not exactly looking like a good way of removing controversy right now.

The French sports minister has called for an investigation regarding alleged racist abuse in their friendly at St Petersburg.

Those familiar with my views won't be remotely shocked to see me raise the issue of LGBT fans supporting their teams in a country with such laws.

There is currently accusations of assassination in a foreign state and repeated corruption of democracy labelled at Russia.

Will the football manage to fight its way through this lot, so that it is what we are talking about, rather than the rest?

This is going to be a World Cup to remember isn't it?

Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be for the right reasons.

fecking hell. Scumbags.

Strap in your seatbelts and all that. I'd be surprised if we get through the whole thing without one incident of violence, racism or fraud in some manner.

Then we have Qatar to look forward to in 2022.

I wonder how many lives will be lost in the construction of the stadiums over there, due to the awful working conditions for labourers. I also wouldn't be totally surprised if players had serious problems playing in the heat there too, could be lethal.

Fifa are really a horrible, corrupt organisation and it really taints the so called 'beautiful game'.

Anyway, I love football but it's hard to get excited about these upcoming World Cups.

I'd consider banning all Russian clubs from CL for considerable future if their FA don't clamp on racism pronto!!

As a Russian (though I've lived in UK since I was a child) I'm fecking ashamed.

With the accusations and banning of Russian athletes ,the present diplomatic crisis following the alleged poisonings now the racist call from last night it seems that 'the rest' are hell bent ( just short at the moment) of boycotting the World Cup in Russia.
As with the bizarre imo appointment of Qatar for 2022 it only makes sense in the world of FIFA .
Strange goings on.

I won’t be watching the WC in Russia and I won’t be watching the one in Qatar either. The corruption is sickening and I won’t allow myself to watch the tournaments due to obvious reasons.

Not to mention it'll be played in winter, disrupting most leagues. There's not a single legitimate reason to hold a WC in Qatar.

Should never have happened and although I agree I will be watching. You're a better person than me :)

I vaguely remember creating a thread about boycotting the Russia World cup and getting ridiculed for it :(

The worst part is I can't find it again.

Your memories are incorrect comrade, there was no thread. Now come, drink up your tea.

It just goes to show how empty Fifa's whole respect and "no to racism" campaign is when they just sell the World Cup to a country with well documented issues with racism.

Terrorist attack. Hopefully we'll be spared but wouldn't surprise me one bit.

All things considered....Terrorism, Hooliganism, Racism, Homophobia, Corruption, I'd say a very high risk and toxic cocktail..!!

Brazil was expected to be chaos, but the football went rather smoothly. The same can't be said for the people involved in rushing to build stadiums, specifically those who were killed doing so in awful working conditions. In terms of football it was very good, but there's always more to a tournament than that. Personally, I think the country that wins the bid to host the world cup should be ready to host it tomorrow, but that's a whole other discussion.

The possible risks and concerns about Russia stem from somewhere completely different, but I'd be surprised if the tournament goes off without a hitch. France '16 was a bit of a preview in terms of the hooliganism, I expect it will be worse in Russia. Add in the very likely cases of toxic prejudice both inside stadiums and out, and it could get ugly.

I remember Panorama's programme and shitmongers like Campbell talking absolute shite about Poland and Ukraine prior to the 2012 Euro, sweet feck all happened even though our regular victim of racism (and not his incompetence as a coach) warned people that they could 'come back in coffins'.

Having said that, I do enjoy the shitride Russia has to endure now, long may it continue.
