I think the American kid is Eddie Johnson, a 6 foot 3 inch striker, age 18. He will be on the next US WC squad. He came in for a two week try out in Jan 02, and I think United signed him, then loaned him back to the MLS for the summer. Another American that United should scoop up right now is 14yr old wonderchild, Freddy Adu. Freddy Adu
Fabulous Freddy

As biased as this may sound, what do you guys think of Brian McBride? He seems to be awesome on headers from crosses and set pieces. He's not fast, but does get into position.

I live in Columbus Marcello so I see McBride play alot. He is really a very good player who should be playing in the Premiership. He may not be fast, but like you said he is always in position and when he is not scoring he is making plays. I personally would love to see him get out of his contract here and stay at Everton. He would be a great addition for them. He is thirty now so he will have another five years or more and why stay here and play MLS when he could really be playing with players more of his caliber in the Premireship. Everton wqould be smart to keep him and then get that spot for the CL next year. Would be really good to see him play against some of the big European teams.

There's alot of unharnessed talent in the US. Donovan, Beasley now...Quaranta, Ed Johnson very soon.

McBride is impressive (for a yank ;) ), hes a big lad, who knows his abilities. Ive never seen him try and out run a defender or do fancy dribbling, i think he knows his limits.
For a big lad he's certainly very acrobatic in the air and he makes intelligent runs, and to top it off he's a decent finisger aswell.
I wouldnt rank him as United quality but he's certainly a brilliant purchase (even if it is a loan) for Everton, he compliments Radzinski and Rooneys pace very well.

A 13year old playing for a U17 national team speaks for itself(actually he scored on his debut for the U17 in Nov'01, aged 12), and don't say because the US is crap :D
Doesn't he train with Spector in Florida, I'd expect United have seen him, but the MLS will try to sign him. US 'soccer' needs a world class player, but it will be hard to hold on to him. Also from a coaching angle the player might be better developed in a european club. Of course this player along with the first chinese world class player will be a marketer's goldmine. ;)

I don't think he'd start at United, but he would see the pitch at times. He'd be great on Beckham corners/crosses. I also like Clint Mathis, but he tends to dissapear at times. He's got more speed than McBride, although not as good on headers. However, he is an excellent free kick taker. If United really wanted to purchase a player that can operate as a striker and/or wing, I'd say go get Donovan (RW, AM, ST), but Leverkusen own his rights. There are some quality players in the US that United could purchase on the cheap. Beasley would cost roughly 3-4m and immediately gives United cover at LW. Add a FB and a ST, perhaps solve the Carroll/Lopez issue, and United will have the complete squad it needs.

Landon Donovan can be that player. Even more so at a club like Manchester United where he would be exposed to hundreds of millions of fans. And his play would speak for itself. Of course, he would need to bulk up 10 pounds or so to handle the rigors of EPL play.

They key is gettin the players to leave the US. They all want to stay home and play rather than sit on a bench somewhere else. Plus the MLS seems reluctant to allow any stars to leave....

The MLS is a fledgling league and need to keep homegrown stars in order to survive. The MLS is really looking for 2-3 American stars that succeed on the international scene to influence more fans, and thus increase revenues and entice sponsors to give more money. It is a matter of time before a handful of bonafide world class players emerge on the US scene at young ages. The MLS will more than likely be a feeder league for years to come, unless they do like Brazil in the 50-60s and not allow the selling of the star players (why Pele never played in Europe).

One difficulty is that there is a range of european and south american football available on TV, and the MLS does not yet have the quality to entertain over these 'competitors'.
But plently of countries lack a big money league yet survive, and develop and sell on their best players.
You only have to look at the traditional three sports in the US to see the level of athlete out there, but commiting them to 'soccer' is going to be hard when there is so much money and prestige to the big three. For the immigrants to the US(like the Adu kid is ghanaian) who have soccer 'in their blood' then its different, they feel about soccr as most americans feel about baseball, football and baseball.

You were at Wright Patterson huh? Yea we got about 18 inches of the white stuff. Sucks to be us. My husband got out of the driveway but that was about it. Got stuck until some nice people came and pushed him out. We have not seen snow like this in years. It will probably be gone later this week as we will see it warm up to the low 40's. ( where is my suntan lotion :D )

This is true, but there is thought that McBride has a clause in his contract that will allow him to get out of his new contract here. He knows Moyes and played under him at Preston. I agree that he will compliment Rudzinski and help bring Rooney along nicely. He does know his limits and does not try to be a superstar. He doesn't have to because he leads by example on the pitch and that is what a leader should do. The MLS would be smart to let McBride go to Everton. He is not a United player, true, but he would be damn good at Everton or even a few other Premireship teams. :)

Jonathan Spector, 16 a CB(6ft 1) with the U17 team. He qualifies for an EU passport, so no work permit issues. He is expected to sign March 1st.

The other kid, the 'big hope'; Freddy Adu just got his US passport so he can play for the US U17 in the world championship in Finland later in the year. If he has a good tournament then there should be some big offers for him, the story is that Inter offered 750K$ for him when he was 12, after he impressed at a tournament in Italy with an american team.

I can understand the MLS wanting to keep the exciting players to add to the entertainment value of the league, but if the player has something special and they want to fulfil their potentil, well which club would you think has more experience with developing world class talent; Manchester United or D.C. United?
And they need to get there at 15-16 IMO.
