It is still in the mail. The 5 disc set was ready for dispatch but the suitcase thingumy was a few days late. I'd guess that it will arive just after New Year.:(

HD DVD has already lost IMO. Could be wrong of course. BluRay movies have between 85 and 95% of the market down here and that is before the massive sell of PS3s over the Christmas/New Year period. PS3 will kill HD DVD especially if Warner go BluRay only as is rumoured.

Can't see any other outcome but BluRay winning this little battle.

I had an argument with Rams about this about a year ago, he said that HD-DVD would win. It was always quite obvious that Blu-ray will win this battle, as the amount of PS3s (even if BD was forced upon Sony Computer Entertainment by the parent company) that have sold and will sell, gives it an immediate advantage, and a very large one at that.

Anyone that has a PS3 or stand-alone BD player should buy the BBCs Planet Earth on BD, it's obsolutely gorgeous, gobsmacking.

It just arrived. We have people coming over for a BBQ so I'm not sure I'll get a chance to watch today :(

I wanted to watch the original European cinema release first and then The Final Cut but there is definitely no time for that :(

And I'm out all day tomorrow :(

I was reading the other day in an interview with Ridley Scott about his new film, that he just released a new "final cut" version. Is that on the discs?

Yes, the Final Cut is the main issue

All the versions are there in the 5 disc box, the new final cut, the original 1982 US and International versions, the 1992 director's cut and the rarely seen work print version which was used for test screening originally.

I second that. Its mind blowingly awesome!

I have just watched the original (digitally remastered) original European cinema release for the first time in about 30 years. They have also remastered the soundtrack so that the music isn't as intrusive as it was in the Director's Cut.

Utterly brilliant. The "Sam Spade" voice-over is superfluous but is far less intrusive than you imagine from the fuss made about it when it was removed for The Directors Cut in the early 90's. The tacked on end is unnecessary but doesn't spoil the film at all. There was far less wrong with this film than might be imagined. If there hadn't been a fuss about the studio imposing the voice-over on Ridley Scott, the original would have been far better received by critics I'd say.

I will watch the Final Cut next.

P.S. Blu Ray rules.

The Final Cut is superb. Not massively different from the Directors Cut but a few scene additions/edits, the odd dialogue change to correct minor inconsistencies plus digital image and sound remastering. The voiceover and cheesy ending are of course still missing.

Sublime piece of film making. Now probably number 2 on my best film list (when I get around to finalising it).

BluRay still rules.

yeah, the Final Cut is a piece of beauty.
They've fixed the famous obvious bloopers like the stunt double in the Zhora death scene and Harrison's conversation with the Egyptian very nicely.

You's a crazy man.

Glad to hear the Final Cut is good though, can't wait to see it. Was hoping it would be on at the Cornerhouse on Oxford Rd but might have missed it :(

It is unnecessary and silly but it didn't spoilt the film, as in wreck it, for me. Some anoraks make out as if it makes the film unwatchable.

Having not seen the original for so long I was amazed at how little voice over there actually was.

The Final Cut is very good indeed. Especially on a HD big screen.
