This is concerning surround sound. Now not having the dollars to invest in an expensive TV or surround sound, i've knocked off mum and dads old surround sound system and setting up through the Red and White cables that come with the PS3 'composite is it?'

Now this doesn't allow me to put out in 5.1 and was wondering if you know of anything that will allow me to transmit the sound from my tv using HDMI to the speakers?? I've looked at the DVD players laying around the place and they only have output not input for Audio.

Edit does have the digital opitic input.

Weaste, what if I hook the surround sound up to an old dvd player that supports 5.1 and then Tos link from the PS3 to the DVD player?

I thought that you said the DVD players don't have audio input? I wouldn't expect they would have.

Go buy a TOSlink digital optical cable, one end in the PS3, one end in the receiver, job done.

surround sound has audio input on the back of the sub which is what i'm using now, but its pretty wank on 2 channel.

2 channel isn't surround sound, it's stereo, left and right. All you need to do is get a digital optical cable and connect it up.
