I've recently come into a bit of money, enough to fund the purchase of a PS3; as the resident expert on said subject, which version would you recommend 40, 60, or 80 gig?

Many thanks,

Dr. Dwayne.

I'm working on it. My wife is adamant that I'll do nothing but watch internet porn. I've tried to tell her this isn't the case (maybe I shouldn't have said that if I want porn I'll rent it off cable or go buy some from a used book store [they sell dvd's]).

Anyway, if I have a PS3, mehro, it's just one more item in the 'pro-internet' argument. How else will I join others and play online?

Aha! you say. See, I'm working on it.

Well I guess you can't say she's not right though... :D

tell the truth Dr.

you don't have internet cause you are a cheap bastard

As you don't seem to be here, and you have those three options - when was the 40Gb ever available in North America? If it is NA, off memory, the 60Gb is the original real deal, it has a whole PS2 inside, and is thus almost 100% compatible. The NA 80Gb = Europe 60Gb, it has the PS2 graphics chip, with the processor emulated. The 40Gb is the European model without any PS2 backwards support and has no card reader and two less USB ports. SACD has also been removed. It does however have a 65nm Cell, which means less power used, less heat, less cooling required, and less fan noise.

Get a 360 mate, better games for almost half the price!

To be fair, who gives a shit about Blu Ray, its for the mega rich, DVD is perfect and Xbox live is sick.

interesting, thanks Weaste. Sony started making a 40gb version available in NorthAm just prior to the Christmas shopping season, in order to compete on a price level with the Xbox360.

What's SACD?

hate microsoft with a passion. Monopolistic companies bother me as I grew up in a socialist-leaning Canadian province with little free market choice in utilities.

the 40gb has been here since the PS3 was launched i think

that said i am thinkin of buying one too.

I have a PS2, and if i do purchase a ps3 would i be able to play my ps2 games on it(any model)

if not could you please tell me which ps3 would be ideal so that i can still play RE4 until the PS3 RE5 comes out :D

Yet you prob use one of their products?

I didn't say I boycott their products. I'm not about to use hippie freakin apple computers...:wenger:

I'm simply not about to rely on one company for my entertainment. Especially a predatory monoploy that prefers to eliminate its competiton through insidious means rather than through head to head free market capitalism.

Microsoft products are usually good though. Ive never had any problems with them.

oh yeah, they're generally well made and such but I feel microsoft has imposed itself rather heavily on the computing public. Plus I really liked DOS and then windows came along and made computing acessible to almost everyone.

The US release was a 20Gb model without WiFi, without Card Reader, and a 60Gb model with the lot. The 20Gb was removed from the market a long time ago, and the 60Gb NA model was replaced by the current 80Gb model.

Europe only had a 60Gb model at launch, which is the same as the NA 80Gb, this has now been removed for the current 40Gb model in Europe.

If you want full PS2 compatibility, then the NA launch/release 60Gb is the one to go for. The 80Gb still does the job, but backwards compatibility as dropped to about 90% - Sony have a website where you can check out any PS2 title to see how well it works. 40Gb European model, forget about it.

so what you're saying is go for the 60gb version? I'm not overly concerned about backwards compatibility, is this still the best choice for me?

If you don't care about backwards compatibility, go for the new model without the card reader and only 2 USB ports. It has the newer Cell, uses less power, and doesn't need as much cooling, thus less noise (they were never really noisy in the first place).

If you ever need it to read a card, you can stick a $5 dollar card reader into one of the 2 USB ports, job done. The game controller only needs a USB port for recharging its battery, and you can recharge that on a PC if required. Quite a few people stick their controllers into their laptops to charge them whilst still playing the PS3 on their sofas. I don't see the loss of 2 USB ports to be a problem, and you can always stick a hub in there if really required.
