I think your the man to ask anyway...

My PS3 Has suddenly stopped working on my TV at 1080i (I think it's i, 1920x1080 resolution anyway).

This is what happened so far:

With no change, movement of cables or anything, I tried to load the PS3 up last night and my TV (Samsung 40in LCD HD Ready bla bla bla) came up with the message "Mode not supported).

After looking for an answer online I got the reset instructions and loaded it up in standard resolution so I know the PS3 is working fine in a hard drive and optical drive sense and it's also now playing a DVD in standard resolution no problems.

I have tried to set it back to 1920x1080 resolution but it gives me the old style "ants on a whiteboard" no signal screen and eventually resets to the standard definition screen which again works fine.

I also have my PC rigged up to the television and that is still working fine at 1920x1080p through an HDMI cable so I assume it is definately down to the PS3?

Have you heard of this before?

Odd!

Does it output 720p?

Nope, just tried it and had the same ants on a whiteboard effect. If I try 1080p it goes black and tells me "Mode is not supported".

Also, tried all four HDMI inputs on the TV and it's still not working....

Hmmm, shall have a think about this.

What is the resolution of the TV, do you know?

It changes depending on the input source? 1920x1080p is the maximum I know that much and I have had it set to that resolution since I bought the PS3.

Do you remember when you were playing the SNES and it would crash, and you would blow the cartridge and it would work again?

Try that. It'll work, it's foolproof.

Try with a new cable
If not ok, reset your PS3 and try again
If not ok, try with another PS3
If not ok, must be your TV, hope there's still warranty

He first has to make sure that everything is set right, so that means resetting the PS3 to factory defaults, and connecting it to the TV with the normal A/V cable. From there he can then connect the HDMI cable, and change the video and audio output settings to HDMI. From there, he should then remove the standard A/V cable, and try to change the resolution, at least to 720p to see what happens.

Try the HDMI cable that you use for the PC as it could be a cable fault...or maybe the port itself?

Why didn't I see this earlier...

Yep, it's the HDMI cable that is bust. Luckily it is the cheap one I bought from GAME with the PS3 and not the good one that came with my TV. I think I have another HDMI cable that came with another TV or if not I'll take it back to GAME and demand a new cable.

Cheers to everyone that tried to help :)

So you've basically been playing DVDs over the standard A/V cable?

Nope that's the strange thing, at 480p the DVDs have been playing perfectly. It's only at the higher resolutions it won't work. I used the broken hdmi cable in my pc to tv it works but the blues seem to be absent and the reds too strong. So it basically seems like a knackered cable. It's GAMEs own cable so I'm hoping they will replace without fuss as I have a GAME card with them which acts as a reciept.

Ok, a problem with shielding or a bad connection then is introducing noise or causing signal loss, which is a problem for PS3, as it will not output in HD over HDMI without a good HDCP handshake. That could explain why it will play SD content over HDMI but not HD content.

I didn't know the terminology but guessed it was something along those lines, the lucky thing is, I've just bought a logitech z-5500 sound system and needed optical and digital coaxial cables to link it to my TV, PC and PS3 and amazon came up with a bundle for those cables which included an HDMI cable for £6.51. So that's that sorted :)
