would you be happy if argentina lost tonight and brazil didnt go to the wc cos of that? or would a loss to uruguay just be too annoying?

who do you think will argentina pick in their wc squad?

Tough question Jens.
On the one hand Argentina has not lost a game for over a year and the NT has developed a mystique that would be affected by a loss to Uruguay.

On the other hand the prospect of watching the Brazilians sweating it out against the Aussies is very tempting.

Let the chips fall were they may, but I guess deep down I prefer to see the NT win.

Of the 23 team spots for the WC, 19 are filled by the players that took part in the qualifying games.

The four spots left are:
GK: I hope Bielsa picks Bonano, who's having a good season at Barca.

CB: My pick is Coloccini (Alavés), though Bielsa might go for the tried and tested Sensini (Parma),Pellegrino (Valencia) or Berisso (Celta).

M: This is where all hell breaks loose as Bielsa is reluctant to bring on yet another creative midfielder. The pecking order is Verón-Aimar-Gallardo and the whole country is up in arms screaming for Riquelme to join the team. Tough call as Bielsa is not easily swayed. G.Lopez from Celta or Husain from Napoli might be chosen here.

CF: Saviola is the popular choice behind Bati and Crespo, but again Bielsa might go for experience with Cruz (Bologna), Palermo (yechh, Villareal) or Sosa (Udinese)

The regular squad is:

GK's Burgos (AMadrid) and Cavallero (Celta)
D's Ayala, Samuel, Sorín, Pochettino, Vivas (yechh), Placente
M Almeyda, Verón, Simeone <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" /> , Zannetti, Aimar, Gallardo, Kili
F: Bati, Crespo, C. Lopez, Ortega

Hey Scalisto,
Rate/rank these guys:
Verón-Aimar-Gallardo-Riquelme-Husain-Ortega
Saviola-Bati-Crespo-Cruz-Sosa-C.Lopez

d´alessandro´s too young to make this year´s wc squad ... also they have a quite a couple of attacking midfielders, dont they? ;)

then theres still romagnoli ...

thanks for your post, scalisto ...

i want brazil to play v the aussies and the huge question mark imo is the argentina v uruguay match ... anything can happen with brazil, but argentina just seem too strong ...

agreed re: bonano ... your goalies arent really top notch so i would maybe even consider starting him

id go for coloccini and pellegrino in defence and dump vivas .. vivas is just utter shite and it´s a miracle to me that he´s in the squad ...

midfield is where it gets really tough .. how many players that are capable of playing the am role do you have again? seba, aimar, gallardo, riquelme, d´alessandro, ortega and romagnoli? that´s scary ... only problem imo is that you dont have too many defensive midfielders ala keano or vieira ... zanetti´s more valuable in defence imo

gustavo lopez would be nice to have in the squad cos there arent too many wingers except for kily

id go for claudio lopez, bati, saviola and crespo up front, which is one hell of a strike force

dump gallardo, imo riquelme´s better than him

your whole squad is just bloody amazing imo

whats your problem with palermo except for his history at boca, or is that the reason? ;)

i like the lad, hes a nutter ...

Yes, I agree about Bonano. But coach Bielsa seems to favor Burgos.

Vivas is the NT whipping-boy, everybody agrees he's shite but Bielsa has blind faith in him and prefers to play Zannetti in MF, which is often the case at Inter too.

Bielsa has not played Ortega as a midfielderm but rather as a right winger. I would also grin and bear it and drop "Muñeco" Gallardo and bring on Riquelme as a sub for Verón, as Aimar has been used as a sub for Ortega.

There's just too much talent to choose from in the creative midfielder position to even consider D'Alessandro and Romagnoli. They'll just have to be content with the U-20 WC until 2006.

As far as DM's are concerned, if Simeone and Almeyda are fit, there'll be no need for Husain. In any case, I would prefer Deportivo's Aldo Duscher as a third DM over Husain.

To me, Palermo is Argentina's Emile Heskey. Anybody would score loads of goals with Riquelme providing the talent.

thanks Jens. It was directed to Scalisto. ;)

Haven't seen Carreño that much. Last season he was with Chacarita and mostly on the bench. This year he seems to have come suddenly alive in a couple of Mercosur games and some substitutions in league games. I think a little more time is needed to see if he's just a flash in the pan or a really good prospect.
I don't see him starting for Boca :( on November 27 against Bayern Munich, but Bianchi might give him a chance during the game.
