Assuming we only sign a centre-half (whoever that may be) and that is our only defensive signing, do you think the entire defence and Barthez will keep more clean sheets in the coming season?

We only really need a very good CB, another striker, and a versitile defensive player that can play on both flanks. The majority of the money should go towards buying an excellent CB.

If Blanc does stay, I don't really see the need to buy more than one CB. If we get Rio, then we would have Brown, O'Shea, Blanc, and Rio + David May (mentioned so not to upset Yaps ).
I think that we need more cover on the flanks now that Irwin has gone. We only really have the Nevilles and Silvestre to cover those positions. If Blanc does go however, then yes, I'd agree that we need another CB now and not next season.
