I'm starting Muay Thai on Tuesday, and since it's my first fighting sport that involves kicks, I'm wondering if I might have some trouble.

I ask this because my dominant hand is right, while my dominant leg is left. And I'm not a bit ambidextrous.

Will this be a problem?

no... ideally you want your strong foot at the back as its where you generate your power kicks from...

im right handed and right right lead... i do jkd and to me its more efficient... plus i prefer throwing elbows etc off the front hand as it gives your opponent less time...

but in truth your main problem is going to be getting your shins blasted to feck... buy some muay thai oil... use lots of it...

Yea I'm expecting that. Gona get a heavy bag to help me along.

So you think I have to switch my feet, Right leg forward right hand back?

no id go right hand forward... well i do go right hand forward right leg forward... southpaw... and its my powerside... works very well for me and would probably work even better if my left leg was my power leg...

though in truth when you understand the mechanics of how to kick and realise that the power goes where you piunt your standing foot and where your power ark lies (basically step off as its prior to 180 degrees) it will matter much less which leg you kick with...

you instructer will tell you what he thinks is best for you... try both ways... i can fight left or right lead so ill swith but if you fight south paw a lot of people find it tricky against you especially if they are traditional stance and you keep your right foot outside theres and circle right as it takes you out of their power arc for their string hand and loads you up for yours plus if you fight with your left leg back youhave a power kick into the liver whjich becausen of the way the human body is you can never deliver with the right leg...

thats why i fight southpaw as i find it more efficient and trickier for opponents... especially if you can switch stance to feck with them...

the best way to conditionyour legs is by blocking kicks with them... of kicking trees or something similar... heavy bags wont realy do it... as you will always kick with 1 part of the shin... where as when you are blocking you will take blows from the ankle to the knee... it will hurt... get muay thai oil... use lots... LOTS trust me on this LOTS

Cheers man

I'll have to recommend this stuff to my friends.

if they do muay thai im sure they will know about it already?

whatever you do though dont rub it all over your legs then itch your eye or wipe sweat off your brow as the stuff burns like a motherfecking hot burny thing when it gets in your eyes

I think they use different stuff. Not sure what it is though

I've heard you shouldn't rub it in too high on your thighs. How painful is it up by your package after some?

its not painful at all unless its in your eyes... its just like super effective deep heat... realy stops bruising developing though

Really? I heard that stuff really burns when it's near your balls.

trust me getting kicked in the liver and blocking full bore muay thai kicks with your shin will hurt far more... if your worried about a little deap heat on your thighs your worrying about the wrong thing

Nah not worrying about it at all. Just heard someone talking about that stuff before

beardsleybob, been awhile.

I can't add much other then the fact I sparred with a guy who has your "problem" and his form was a secret, unexpected power, he kept his natural ability and ended up beating me simply because I wasn't ready whatsoever for what was to come.

Ya I've been told it would be an advantage against orthodox stances. When I strengthen my bad leg it'll be less of a problem

I take muay thai (haven't been in two weeks cause I went do with high-risk flu, slowly getting better). Pretty much what Ezee said is spot on. I'd stick to southpaw stance if I was you. You're Your shins are gonna fecked big time. Trust me. I never heard of the muay thai oil till now, so I'm gonna ask our masters of their use (tbf though, if Ezee is saying it's good, then it has to be good).

Another good exercise to strengthen your shins is this. Place your shins across from a friends and slowly begin to tap your shins against each other. This will hurt but it will go a long way to conditioning them. In general though, they won't get conditioned for a while. It'll take months and months depending on how often you do it. Our class is three times a week for 2 hours, but I train on off days in my basement doing cardio and working on the bag for about 45 mins.
How often is your class and how long?

where do you train, Mabs? My mate owns a gym in 'sauga.

For all y'all practitioners out there I recommend a Chinese herbal ointment known as Zheng Gui Shui. It's ace. Take a walk to your local Chinese herbalist and inquire.

No don't know him.

You should be fine then, with 2 to 3 classes a week. It'll take a long time to condition your shins that way though. Try to train on off days also.

Apparently he's the best ever Irish Muay Thai fighter. Won a few world titles for himself among others.

I play soccer Fridays and hit the gym 3 days a week so I'm sorted for that

Ok, cool. I'll look him up.

Once you full that you're ready beginning sparring with your friends in the class. I spar pretty much at the end of every class with a friend and we go pretty hard except for punches and high kicks to the head. Nothing conditions you better than sparring imo.

good idea on the punches and high kicks. I'd hate to break my nose just sparring. I know I'm not fit yet, because I couldn't do the last set of pushups at the end of 90 minutes. I may just be hard on myself but feck it, I need to push myself
