I'll no doubt be slaughtered for this but I am interested in knowing, even marginally so, how the ad system works on the site.

I've noticed that certain threads have ads oriented very much toward the content of the thread. I tried to test this by starting a thread about strap-ons to see if anything would come up. Nothing.

Now, I was checking out the gay Footballers thread and the ads were "Are gay people born that way?" and "Meet Hot Gay Men."

So one thing may be that Strap-On Tools (the legitimate mechanical tool company) and makers of adult oriented marital aids don't advertise with redcafe.net, on the other hand, perhaps the site is not a technically advanced as I think.

Does the site have a database of advertisers that correlates thread content, where possible, to ad links?

:wenger:

You click on ad, Niall makes money. Mods get paid.

Happy mods = site works, spastics get banned.:)

Ok, maybe I shouldn't have used the word marginally.

I know that much, Suresh, you cheekey fecker you ;)

How is it that the ads in some threads are very topical re the content of the thread and others are not. Keywords?

Heh-heh.

Know what you mean though. A couple of months ago I was absolutely certain the appearance of my name was triggering that annoying Indian match-making ad. I swear it appeared in every thread I posted in. Something spastic I've unknowingly done with my Firefox seems to have completely stopped all the ads though. Wish I knew what!

And with that match-making comment, up comes "Free Toronto Dating"

This just keeps getting more and more cloak and dagger, doesn't it?

You should really direct this question at the Google support staff.

I hope that helps.

So Google supplies the ads? Their search engine technology n' all that? See, I had no idea. Who says you mods are fat and unhelpful?

As for contacting Google support staff, well, I don't want to get in over my head in technical phrasology I have zero hope of understanding.

If I knew the whole of this mystery it wouldn't be fun anymore.

Thanks, Weaste Devil.

I think that Google "choose" the ads that go to each site/page by a combination of their keyword/search technology but that advertisers can opt in or out of advertising on particular web sites.

Niall will know the deatails better.

I suspect you need a certain level of traffic before Google will accept you.
