Right, I'm just wanting your opinions on one Pharrell Williams.

Personally I think this bloke is the embodiment of talent. He has to be one of the most unique artists doing the rounds, seriously he isn't pinned down by that whole 'gangsta-rap' stigma. He's his own man, and does his own thing.

What is he even, a skeg (aka skater) black hip-hop artists.... There's no label for that. He just takes the piss, wearing shorts and that in his clips (as opposed to mega phat gangsta pants), etc.

His tracks are clever too, with some fantastic beats. He's a class producer and produced some wicked tracks with N.E.R.D (credit to the group) and for the likes of JT etc.

Personally I'd probably turn for him, seeing as he just doesn't seem to give a shit about any of that gay stereotype bollox.

Legend.

.... Anyway... Your thoughts?

He's not that great. As a rapper, the only good verse I've heard him come out with was recentley on 'US Placers' with Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Thom Yorke. (which by the way, is a bloody brilliant song)

As a producer, he is nothing without Chad Hugo. This was underline by his solo album which was piss poor to be honest. Not even the brilliant collab with Jay-Z could save it. Him and Chad Hugo together though = dreams alive in music.

As an artist himself, I believe him to be pretty average to be honest.

Fair enough.

I cant say I know too much about Hip-Hop/Rap... At least not enough to warrant an a proper opinion (I'm more of a Electro man myself).

I guess I'm still caught up in the uniqueness.

Aye, Hip Hop was me first love but I have a very diverse taste these days. Like a bit of house techno/dance/euphoria and some old rock and new indie.

Have you checked out both N.E.R.D. albums? There second Fly Or Die is just about the most original piece of musical brilliance I've ever listened too.

Pharrell is a hard one to talk about.

I personally prefer the producer side of him. He has had a few mixtapes out, a solo album and other work by himself and apart from a couple tracks, he hasn't impressed me too much. I will argue though, that as a producer he has made some of the best Hip-Hop recently, especially before he was turned into a god like figure by the media.

I kind of agree/disagree with Dorada. I do think Chad is a huge part of Pharrell's producing side, and no doubt, when they work together, they produce some hit music. However, I've heard a lot of Pharrell's work by himself and you can still see the talent there and the ability he has, so I don't think he is 'nothing' without Chad.

Like Kanye West, he was far better before he became commercial. His music has a raw edge to it, and the beats were all varied because he didn't have set artists to work with, before he blew up, Pharrell was unbelievable. I still like him now, but he has moved over several genres now and his music isn't half as much Hip-Hop as it used to be, but that's just my opinion. What I do love about Pharrell though is his own unique style. He can make a beat, play it with or without lyrics on it and you will know it's Pharrell instantly, even if it is a different genre to his usual one. He had made several sounds his own, and has mastered the ability to produce hit after hit, I use Clipse as an example here.

Take away the Hip-Hop side of it, and the other genres aside, when you look at him as just a producer, it's almost impossible to deny that he has some serious talent on a whole range of levels. His producing skills, marketing, image, everything. I have a lot of respect for Pharrell because he marketed himself in the perfect way, without making himself look a complete dick about it. That, and when he first came out, his music was a light at the end of the tunnel, there was some serious rubbish coming out and Pharrell helped to change it. Nowhere near my top artists or producers, but still a great one.
