Just read this on SOCCERTV.COM. looks like ESPN2 is going to drop the CHampions league to be placed on ESPN Deportes. Even though the text says Deportes is available I dont have it. I will be calling DIRECTV to find out what I have to do but I think its going to cost me more   Below is the text.

ESPN Deportes to launch full time on September 7, 2003

September 23, 2002

Disney (NYSE: DIS) unit ESPN has announced that it will expand its Sunday night Spanish-language US cable/satellite TV service ESPN Deportes to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week effective September 7, 2003.

ESPN Deportes is expected to replace ESPN2 as the US TV outlet for the UEFA Champions League.

ESPN International currently holds an option to renew its contract for the EXCLUSIVE TV rights to UEFA Champions League in all countries and territories outside Europe through May 2006 with Swiss sports marketing company Team Marketing AG.

ESPN International also holds an option to purchase US TV rights in English, Spanish, and Portuguese to 3 first-choice Spanish Primera Division (a.k.a. La Liga) matches each week via an agreement with Barcelona-based sports marketing agency Media Pro.

Besides the UEFA Champions League, ESPN Deportes will also offer its weekly futbol talk show Fuera del Juego, hosted by ESPN Latin America futbol play-by-play announcer Luis Omar Tapia. Tapia did play-by-play for Univision Sports during World Cup 2002.

ESPN Deportes will also air SportsCenter en Espanol, a nightly sports news and information program, with emphasis on entertainment sports consumed by US Hispanic viewers. SportsCenter en Espanol will compete against TeleFutura's Contacto Deportivo, Telemundo's Titulares Telemundo, and FOX Sports en Espanol's Score Final.

ESPN Deportes is currently available to about 13 million US TV households on Sunday nights via analog or digital cable in selected areas, as well as via DirecTV Para Todos direct broadcast satellite TV. A 24-inch satellite dish capable of receiving programming from both the 101 and 119 degrees longitude orbital positions, as well as a DirecTV Plus or a DirecTV Para Todos satellite receiver, are required to receive DirecTV Para Todos programming.

Thoughts anyone

Well what about the people in the U.S. who don't speak spanish, and who don't get the channel?

ESPN's coverage is an utter shambles. I just hope we'll see daylight at the end of the tunnel when their contract is up, maybe FSW will step in.

I wonder if this means that Tommy Smyth will be out of a job?

So how do you say "bulge in the old onion bag" in Spanish?

I also noticed on there the other day that Setanta were advertising the games too but I think they are only on closed circuit tv to bars (no good for us poor feckers who have to work).

I sent an email to them last week but have not heard back from them yet.

See utd, poo, arse games on their schedule

Why does it have to be so complicated, we only want to watch a few footie games.

This really sucks. Now I will either have to get Premire League Pass for my dish or just pay the $15.95 for the matches shown on pay per view.

packages

$35 (without HBO etc) but it doesn't list ESPN Deportes.

No Beebamerica either, miss all those changing rooms repeats, (would actually miss eastenders though).

They won't let you buy prem games singularly this year. Either $60 a month or the $269 a year.

Direct will let you pay the 269 monthly Dish want it up front.

The Man United match was on pay perview last weekend, but I could not watch because my schedule got switched at work. The Leeds match the next day was pay per view too $15.95. It said as much in the description on the program guide. I may break down and get the Premire League Pass anyways. When you break it down it is not that expensive considering it covers the whole season from August- May. Problem is right now we are still paying for our Sunday Ticket. But I may do it anyways.
:p

ESPN2 in the states at least doesnt show EPL they are the outlet for the Champions league. However with SKY getting coverage of the Champions league that is a good result as maybe we will get to see them on FSW.

ahh! the silver lining :D but other than that...

WTF ESPN???!!!   :(

Damn clueless pricks!

I knew they'd do this adventually....

They need more time for bass fishing.

After reading the Manchester Unlimited book mostly having to do with tv deals....this has to do with the push to make more money on ppv. I'm not sure if MU had a hand in this underhanded move. Although it wouldn't suprise me Fartin Martin had some influence in making this decision.

Don't blame ESPN. They only show what people watch. Apparently, more people in the US are interested in fishing/hunting shows than CL Football. My hope is that they make these matches available to US viewers via PPV (same way Fox Sports does with their Prem matches on Saturday).

Raoul.....We have to blame ESPN and all the others who don't show the EPL matches, more specifically UNITED, as well as the CL matches too. They don't have brilliant programmers working for them, that's why they show fishing and dog shows. They get low ratings, but that doesn't seem to bother them. Well....I say feck them! Look at all the tv deals out there.....we still getting raped anyway. FSW seems to be "trying" to do thier part.....I'm not so sure! The tv deal with YES and United is on hold because of rights deals with FSW and I think ESPN, infringment rights and so forth. It's all politcally bull crap! If they can't get it all figured out we will all suffer. They don't care as long as thier company is making the dough. The best, IMO is with Direct TV. I've been researching this for a while to find out which way to go. I am definetly going with Direct Tv, even though we still have to pay extra to see United. Time Warner really and truly suck down here. It's the worst cable company you can subscribe to. Basic cable is like $65.00 a month and then goes up from there. I haven't gotten my Direct TV yet, because I don't want the NFL Sunday Ticket. Extra $200.00 right there!I could care a less about the NFL ticket. You get more channels with the satellite for your money then you do with cable and have to pay out more money for the same number of channels. Last year, if I remember correctly, ESPN and ESPN2 did a good job of showing the EPL and the CL matches. It seems it all go thrown to the wolves this year. It's all about the money........I think we all discussed this earlier this year before the up coming season started. I think we need to inundate ESPN and ESPN2 with more emails and tell them they need to pull thier heads out of thier arses. Or maybe FSW can step up to the plate and offer more until the agreements with YES are worked out. I tell you what surprises me the most, the affiliation we have with the Yankees, we don't here about anything, even marketing, merchandising. Anyone up in the NY area can you clarify on this?? That would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!!

The pay per view crap sucks too! If you already have a dish and you get tons of channels why won't they give us the sports channels too. Everything should be included. I'm sorry to offend anyone just venting frustration along with giggsgirl.

for $269 you can be sure you'll see near every
MU match live. it's the only way - espn shows c/l matchs that are truely the "best" match ups. but ratings would increase if they showed the epl clubs more stateside along w/ real et al.

Trust me when I tell you that ratings are king. Despite the vocal protests of some on this site and Koptalk, the amount of people who watch Champions League football is relatively miniscule, compared to the number of hicks who tune into the deuce for their hunting and fishing shows. If ESPN had evidence that more people watched football than fishing in the US, then they would put football matches on. Unfortunately, football matches DO NOT garner as much in commercial/ad revenues for the netword due to the fact that they can only show ads at halftime, compared to other shows where they can show ads every 7 minutes. Money talks in the end.

Rauol Although i agree the problem is that ESPN retains the rights to broadcast the Champions league in english and spanish until 2005 or 6 they will honor this by showing only to those who have espn deportes and thus causing those of us who speak english to suffer. Not that i want to hear tommy smyth or anything. With sky getting the champions league maybe FSW will get the champions league one can only hope
