I am a complete novice when it comes to setting up audio on machines, as I've never really bothered with it in the past.
I've just got a new set of speakers for my PC (Logitech X-540 Multimedia Speaker System: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo) which are alright but nothing overly special. I got them free, though, which is why.
They come with the standard PC 5.1 setup (as far as I can tell) which is three coloured jacks which attach to the relevent ports on my PC. That, apparently, should give me 5.1 surround and Bob's your uncle.
BUT I also want to connect my PS3, if that's possible. Now, that involves two things. Since there'll be two inputs (the PC and PS3) I'd need a switch of some sort, but it seems to me that almost all of the switches are for six cables, not three (maybe to all of the speakers individually or something)? I obviously need a switch that works with the three jack inputs that the speakers have (and outputs of my PC), so I can jump between my PS3 and PC depending on which I'm using.
The OTHER thing is that I need a way to convert my PS3's sound into that format. It only has one 5.1 audio output as far as I can tell (it's a Slim) and that's the optical output, the A/V (which just requires a small adaptor, I think) is just stereo. Is there a way of converting that digital output to this three jack setup? It seems a shame to have 5.1 capable speakers but not be using them for the PS3, especially when it's the PS3 I'll actually be watching Blu-Rays on!
Sorry if that made no sense, and thanks for your help
