I'm talkign about the specific genre of that name, so no smart ass comments thanks. ;)

What regions of the world are you particularly taken with? Your preference?

What new artists have you heard, or established artsits and groups that you would recommend to others?

All that, in here. :)

Now there's a weekly World Music program on BBC Fivelive which i listen to, and i thought i'd flag up someone that i hadn't come across before.

She is of Cape Verdean descent and goes by the name of Sara Tavares. Both Portuguese [Fado] and African influences to her music, well obviously you might say. lol Album by the name of Balancê.

Algerian exile and now Paris resident, singer songwriter Souad Massi rose to the fore a few years back. Though relesed an Accoustic, Best Of, album, earlier this month.

Just a couple that i thought might nterest people, that i'd recommend.

In some ways it is mainly a genre of the West, but i suppoose you could also say, it applies to those in such foreign/ethnic cultures who like music not of their own, i fyou will.

Traiditional, Roots, Folk, Ethnic e.t.c.

Not the standard genres of western music, nor western classical.

Cesaria Evora
Fela Kuti
Femi Kuti
Oumou Sangare
Ali Farka Toure

Agree with the first three, can't say I'm familiar with the other two.

But on the top of my head I'd like to add
Konono N°1
Youssou N'Dour

Not world music but I really think Scandanavia and Iceland have a really good music scene.
