As of the first of January, players with six or less months left on their contract became free to talk to other clubs. There's some great players there that we could certainly do worse than. Thoughts?

Some players on the list include Robert Lewandowski, Jérémy Ménez, Xabi Alonso and Andrea Pirlo.

It is also worth noting that our very own Fábio, Vidic and Evra are on that list, is it likely the next half season is the last we'll see of them in United shirts?

Expiring contracts 2014

Pirlo, Menez, Cole, Matuidi, Lewandowski for free would be a pretty awesome summer to be fair

I think Vidic will stay, but Evra may not, which would be very sad to see, but overall for the best, for him and for us. On the pitch at least. I couldnt say what effect it will have in the dressing room, as he is often described as a massive presence.

I imagine Lewy is going to Bayern, but I'd take Xabi Alonso for nowt any day.

Younes Kaboul for free would be a good coup for alot of teams!

Lewandowski is taken. Pirlo doesn't suit us. Also, he's quite old now. Not the best time to get out of his comfort zone. Menez is not good enough. Cole, definitely not. He's about finished. Not good enough to start for Chelsea or England at the moment and his wages are very high.
Of the ones you mentioned only Matuidi would be decent.

Why haven't Atlético given Raúl Garcia an extension. I've seen him perform very well this season. Finally he's about living up to his promise.

Jucilei, not sure how good he is. Most likely not good enough.

A lot of teams could do worse than nab Ochoa on free. Same with Musacchio.

Swedish posters: Wasn't Albin Ekdal supposed to be promising?
German posters: Same question but about Sebastien Rudy.

I know the last player on the list. He's not actually ours anymore. He's also not a striker.

Would take Matuidi in a heart beat, top player and would fit right in.

Raul Garcia's under contract until 2015, but maybe there's some kind of option or break clause that makes them say it's 2014.

A lot of people think Athletic will come in for him, especially if they sell Muniain or Herrera. Milan are interested as well.

He, not surprisingly, has said he's enjoying his football with Atletico and is hoping to renew.

Vidic will get a one year extension, and at least one of those agents will use United's name to get there player that lucrative deal.

One I didn't see on that list is David Villa, his contract ends this summer. Again he will probably renew with Atletico, but I don't think there's a deal yet.

Nowhere near good enough. He had a few promising moments, yes, and played a lot for the German youth nationalteams, but no one really expected him to become a player good enough for one of the top teams in Germany, let alone Europe.

Sebastian Rode would be the better option and he's also out of contract in 2014, would fit very well next to Carrick, imo. But I can't see him becoming a player that solves United's midfield problems against the top teams either. He's supposedly Bayern bound, but after we let Kirchhoff go after only 6 months he might think again about his future and go somewhere else, there's no way he'll ever become a regular starter for this Bayern team, imo. Though with Kirchhoff gone now, we probably need another Centerback or DM backup next season, bringing Rode in makes now more sense, still doubt it's the best decision for his career.

Stagnated heavily. At Juve he was a bench warmer and at Siena he was uninspiring. Then he had some unlucky injuries troubling him and has slowly the last two seasons climbed back to what one could consider a decent form.

If half of what people say of Matuidi is true then surely we should make it our mission to get him signed up for next season.

Even if we sign another top class midfielder we could do with a good option, besides, Carrick isn't getting younger and lord knows the others haven't set the world alight.

Not seen much of Alen Halilovic, but heard he's got bags of potential, surely a lot of clubs will be after him on a free? And wasn't we rumoured to be scouting Fernando from Porto a few times, could be one on the cards for us.

TBH if these are all going to available on free transfers a couple from Matuidi, Xabi Alonso, Fernando, Diego, Raul Garcia & Pirlo (for a year) would offer something to our midfield... Can't make our centre mid options much worse than what we currently have!

Tom ince
m'bai niang
halilovic
bartra
montoya
are all good young players worth looking at
akinfeev
valdez
lescott
sagna
matudi
menez
diego
lewandoski
are all players at a good age who on a free would be worth considering... though we might not be the right move for them
terry
alonso
pirlo
cambiasso
lampard
etoo
A bit older but they can all still do a good job for a season or two at pl level

there is going to be some rich agents by the end of the window with that lot available

All those midfielders

Matuidi and Fernando would be good. Value in the market at last!

sun_tzu, I don't know you, but I bet you post on United facebook page.

I think Fabio has decided to leave. That's the reason why he's not getting any playing minutes at all. Vidic will leave too. That's the reason Moyes has been playing more of Smalling and Jones to test who will best replace him. Evra will go as Moyes will finally get Baines. Just my guess.

I would love it if we get Pirlo for one season. It'll be like the Larsson effect. He is never for one relying on speed, so age wont matter that much. Great to have if Moyes cant find a world class midfielder yet.

A lot of that talk was surrounding Motta and Matuidi, I think the general tone of it, was that neither are off during January, what happens after that, isn't set in stone.

Is that the Niang who is at AC Milan? We tried to get him before he went there.

I'd like us to be looking at Ince + Fernando who i think could be gettable.

Surely a few names on that list can't be right!? Mame Diouf, Kaboul, Shane Long, McGeady, Musacchio, Halilovic would be other people i'd like us to be looking at.

the president has said both have agreed to sign contract extensions. Nothing confirmed though, just all talk.

How's the form of Diego lately?
Pushed out wide because 19year old Max Arnold is the better AM, doing okay on the wing though. I'm really surprised, thought he would kick up a fuss and become completely shit, but you can't say anything negative about Diego's attitude and workrate, he's just nothing special anymore. No idea what they've done to him at Juve, he was absolutlely brilliant at Bremen.

Didn't Alen Halilovic have a whole load of hype around him? If he's a freebie at the end of the season then I'd expect more news

Would he be free...
Isnt there compensation to pay for players under a certain age (or does that only apply if players stay in the same country)

True probably some compensation but it wouldn't be as much as a transfer fee you'd assume. Though in this situation you'd assume the agent could play the clubs against each other and get them paying him silly money. But if he was as big a talent as people keep/kept saying then it shouldn't put clubs off.

So, rather predictably, Lewandowski is the first to leave for nothing. Some real bargains to be had here.

I had no idea Matuidi's contract ran out at the end of the season. I don't see any reason why PSG would let him go, though maybe they've got a summer spree lined up and feel he'll be surplus to requirements next season? He'd be an immense signing, great talent and seems like a nice down to earth guy. He'd improve our midfield drastically.

He received the Ciro Ferrara treatment of being pretty much the only creative outlet in a useless team. Diego started off superbly but was then quickly found out by Serie A opponents, leading to poor confidence and lots of ball-hogging, not unlike his replacement Milos Krasic. Talented player, but not mentally strong or intelligent enough to be a no 10 at a top side.

Xabi Alonso will be staying at Real Madrid. He's about to sign a new two year contract, apparently.
