So, I'm a footy man (like most of you) who's bought the last 10 PES' on the PS, but I take a keen interest in most other sports - though I'm a bit sceptical and wary of splashing anything more than R300 (+-£30) on other sporting games.

Particularly, I like cricket, rugby and tennis quite a bit (maybe throw in some golf and F1). I've also owned some NFL, NBA and NHL games on my PS and PS2. (though they were "copied" games).

So, any really good sporting games - esp cricket, rugby and tennis? Something you consider value for money which is pretty big on gameplay and graphics.

I've considered the new Jonah Lomu rugby challenge, but the price is a bit steep ATM.

I got FIFA this year for the 1st time after always being a PES fan.

I hated it.

Football games are now dead to me

As for other sport games, I used to love Super Tennis on the SNES and NHL Hockey on the Megadrive. Honestly I have yet to play anything better than them to this day

Hey Randall, what exactly did you use to do to your "Super Tennis" loveR? ;)

Have you played anything good on the PS3, other than footy games? I'm really keen on a good cricket or rugby game. The reason football games are still quite decent for me is because we generally tend to organise games nights and we play 4-5 players either on the same side (playing a world cup) or 2 on 2. But I'd definitely agree that football games are deteriorating rapidly from their peak back in 03 - 06.

(though the new PES is keeping me interested because it is FREAKING difficult, I kid you not).

NBA 2K12 is possibly the best sports game I have ever played.

MLB The Show games are actually probably the best sports games on the PS3, they are just US only. You can pick them up on ebay though

I've seen the Virtual Tennis pro 4 or something like that - anyone ever play those? Aargh, thanks guys. If I cant find a good cricket game, I might just switch over to MLB - though they really don't give me the same pleasure.

You guys played either of the 2 new rugby games out?

I played Virtua Tennis 3 and that was great fun. Can only imagine 4 is an improvement on that. It's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously. I might be making assumptions because I've never played it but maybe Top Spin tries the more realistic approach?

I really did not like it. You could probably get inFamous part one for the same price and I really liked that game.

You have NHL Arcade and NFL blitz available and although they are caricatures of the real deals, they are a blast to play with your mates or online.

I know. Luckily Infamous is already owned in our "circle" of friends, hence I was looking at Prototype. Another one I was told was quite good is Dark Souls.

The reason I'm going on about the "cheapies" (Dark Souls is not quite yet a cheapie) is that I usually only pay full price for +-4 games per year. (PES 2012, Battliedfield 3, Uncharted 3, Far Cry 2 last year).

I usually don't have as much time to play games as I'd like, so I try not to spend too much on full price games, hence I'm strolling around the platinum/cheapie section.

Dark Souls is fantastic, but you need to put a lot of time into it.

Lance, is there a game which you havent played yet!!!!! & here the missus calls me a addict

How is Dark Souls though - more Devil may Cry or Resident evil?

Neither. It is an extremely difficult, open world action RPG. You play in the third person and, while technically, you can go anywhere, you will get annihilated if you venture into certain areas too soon. I hasten to add that, while the difficulty is high, the game is fair. You won't die cheaply. But you will die. A lot.

Have a look.

Aargh, looks very good. I haven't played too many RPG's tbh. My mate just got Skyrim a few weeks ago - so hopefully he'll be able to finish it soon and I can borrow it.

have you played either of them yet Lance? (Skyrim/Dark Souls). There's also a game I'm curious about - which is always rated well - "Little big planet"?

I have completed Dark Souls. I voted it my game of the year in the awards thread.

I also have Skyrim. Played more than 100 hours.

Little Big Planet is a platform game, with a level editor (you can make your own levels and share them online). It's pretty cool.

You won't find a good cricket game. The Codeys games are just the same Ricky Ponting 2005 cricket games remastered with adjustments to the teams.

It's pathetic that it's 2012 and nobody could develop a game thats any better than cricket 2002 from EA

Also, just a little off topic - I can pick up "Protoype" for around R120 (11 pounds) - is it worth it?

I thought it was great, although I played it on the PC rather than the console. It's a bit old now though, £11 seems a bit steep even for the UK.

As for sports games, as someone who has zero interest in tennis, Top Spin 3 was a fantastic game. So I would assume someone who has any interest would be very impressed with it.

Surely you can grab demos of many of them?

The demos I need to download from the PS store, right? my online connection is shoddy at best. I have the data stick, which I thought I could just stick into the PS3 usb slots and connect online - turns out not to be the case for some reason. (unless Weaste can come and give me some better advice then my buddy).

So I need to invest in a wireless router (that right hey?) to plug my data stick into and create a hotspot almost, for my PS to connect with. So up until then, no demos for me(sorry for the long story).

So Weate you'd reckon I need to play Demon Souls first? Definitely going to give that a try then, and get Dark Souls thereafter.

Been saving through my neck for a wedding (got married 11 Dec), so the PS3 has been on a budget for the past 1.5 years. Looking to catch up now.

Amen to that Marchi. The lack of a proper cricket (and to some extent) rugby games are criminal. Surely there's a market for them, especially cricket.

@Snooty - heard good things about Top Spin 4. Last I checked (about 2 weeks ago), I could pick it up for R150 (+-14 pounds). Does that sounds about right?

^ Yeah, true that. I suppsoe looking at it objectively, the biggest markets being the Asian cricket fanatics - can't really afford the games. That leaves SA, Aus, NZ and the UK.

Weaste, just as a topic for discussion - if you invested a bit of money into say the first installment of 1 franchise like "Brian Lara Cricket". Would it be very expensive to run "updates" year in year out - and not updates to the scale of FIFA/PES (though there hasnt been that much improvements there anyway!) or would you have absorbed most of the cost on the first installment?

I have a wee idea about engines and designers/graphics/platform etc...but where would the biggest costs go into sporting games? Licences?

I doubt that an ICC licence would cost that much money. It would be the amount of people required 1) To develop the first iteration and then 2) Support it on a yearly basis.

FIFA somehow gets away with it, but it costs EA naff all and rakes the money in year after year. Maybe Redlambs can make a comment?

Just to de-rail this, was just reading about the new The Show 12 features, one being able to play a career on the PS3 and constantly transfer file saves to the Vita and back again so you can actually have one continous game across both PS3/Vita. Has that been done before on Sony hardware? I'm sure I can remember something similar.

If you made a good cricket game, you could easily sell a million copies across the UK, India, Aus and South east Asia. Look at MLB 12 the show with a similar demographic target. To me nobody could be fecked rather than a lack of profit. Code shiters have their heads too far up their arse to see. There has been a distinct lack of cricket game competition for 5 years and the tight arses still won't shell out for the full ICC license.

Hell I couldn't care less if it was made to bundle with a ps2 for a small price, and just sold as an upscalled version for ps3. Just make a half decent cricket game!

There is all this technology in the game, but nobody will use it!
