I had this conversation on Reddit yesterday. Premise is simple. I might be missing some people.

GKS: De Gea, Henderson, Vitek
RB: AWB, Darmian, Varela
CB: Smalling, Tuanzabe
CB: Kambwala, Mengi, Bailly
LB: Telles, Blind, Albaro
CM: McTom, Pereira, Gomes,
CM: Herrera, Garner, VDB.
WF: Zaha, Januzaj, Sancho,
WF: Elanga ,Pellistri, Di Maria
FW: Lukaku, Ronaldo, Memphis,

Not mentioning a certain forward that we don't speak about. Not Pogba as he's currently banned.

If we aren’t counting Pogba

De Gea
AWB - Smalling - Blind - Fernandez
Gomes
McSauce - Fred
Di Maria - Lukaku - Sancho

Would this team beat our current one? Maybe?!

I think McFred would have done better with someone like Angel Gomes guiding them technically, both were good physically but had to do too much in build-up for their strengths with Bruno's hero ball, whereas Gomes keeping things ticking would be nice.

Lukaku
Sancho* - McTominay - Di Maria
Sabitzer - Gomes
Fernandez - Blind - Keane - Darmian
De Gea

* not yet an ex-United player technically...

No Greenwood & Pogba as per OP. I really don't rate this version of Cristiano anymore so even Lukaku is able to get in the team in front of him. Didn't want to include Smalling as he's basically retired, call me a snob but I don't think he's playing serious competitive football anymore (and he has started disastrously there from what I've read) — while Keane is still a starter for a Premier League side. Pereira is actually unlucky to miss out, he's doing very well at Fulham. Never rated Wan-Bissaka highly so, again, I'll take Darmian who have been decent for Inter from what I've seen of them.

Edit: swapped Fred for Sabitzer

Just adding some more players that are still active:
Sergio Romero, Marcos Rojo and Edinson Cavani are all at Boca Juniors. Cavani recently signed an extension.
Martial (AEK Athens), Sam Johnstone (Wolves), Fosu-Mensah (Free Agent, last at Leverkusen), Mkhitaryan (Inter), Matic (Lyon), Fred (Fenerbahçe), Ashley Young (Everton), Tahith Chong (Luton), Odion Ighalo (Al-Wehda), Arnau Puigmal (Elche), Largie Ramazani (Leeds), Dylan Levitt (Hibernians), Hannibal (Burnley), Marcel Sabitzer (Dortmund), Wout Weghorst (Ajax), Dubravka (Newcastle), Zidane Iqbal (Utrecht), Sofyan Amrabat (Fenerbahçe), Sergio Reguilon (Brentford)

Young--Darmian--Smalling--Reguilon
-------------Gomes---Sabitzer-----------
Perreira---McTominay---Di Maria
--------------------Lukaku-------------------

Think that'd be a decent side for getting the ball wide quick and spamming crosses.

Hmm, forgot about Sabitzer completely! He and Mkhitaryan can actually make the team as well somehow.

Its very sad that I'm looking at some of these teams and thinking "they'd batter us"

I think the thread is a reminder of how average we've been. Only one that would probably make our first team on merit is Lukaku and he has problems off the pitch. Several would make the squad but they wouldn't really improve us.

Our squad now is actually mostly decent which is why people are extra frustrated.

It's why I made it. I was having a conversation yesterday about last players, and just knew, there's no way we'd win 50% of games against a squad like this

Looking at that list just reminds me how many terrible players/players with big reps who did nothing in an united shirt we have signed in the last decade

Good shout.

Is Cavani still playing? Haven't heard anything about him for a while. Folks doing Super Fred a disservice

De Gea
Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Telles
Gomes, Sabitzer, Pereira
Greenwood(Elanga), Lukaku, Di Maria

Manager: LVG

I wouldn't bet that this team wouldn't have same results as current one. With over one billion euros saved.

Hard to leave out Fred but I was going for actual United players (not loanees) and as young a team as possible, Welbeck and Keane the anomalies.
