I seem to keep readin about Essien and calculators on this. Havent got a clue what its all about!! Can someone enlighten me?!!

towards the end of last season he said something about Chelsea being able to catch Utd and win the league, he said he'd "done the maths" or something. Hence the calculator jibes
He said Chelsea would beat United by exactly 5 points, as he had "done the maths".
This was around the turn of the year actually, about the time of that brilliant parody about Drogba claiming to be better than Jesus.
The difference is that Essien really said the calculations shit.

giving rise to the belief that said counting machine was not working properly?

The one I'm thinking of was the CL tie against Valencia. From WIKI:
