I got a PM from someone a bit back asking me to edit a post because I mentioned their real name, so I did but it still shows up on a search although it's no longer in the original thread... is this some sort of glitch..?

why are you only just asking if it was a while ago?
I only just realized it still shows up on a search but when you click the link to the post it says something like post no longer exists.

Email Google and ask them to remove the search listing.
Emailing google hardly works does it? I'm having similar problems at the moment with trying to clean up my name on googles first search page.

Removing results is impossible if you're not the owner of the domain (i.e. I can get results removed from x42bn6.com fairly quickly through Webmaster Tools). Imagine the issues if I could go round asking Google to remove a rival's search results.
Google automatically updates its caches every now and then though so eventually the name will be gone from the Internet.
If it's urgent Niall is able to do things listed on this page to get rid of the name - although do note that Niall is probably a very busy person.

I put a pornstar bird's real name and she found it on a search. She had to join the newbies just to message me. I was trying to get something going with her but the who'er was having none of it.
did you try deleting the original post rather than editing it?
You deleted the original thread so it will disappear pretty soon.
