AGENT COY OVER UNITED INTEREST
by Philip Seery
EXCLUSIVE
THE agent of Benfica goalkeeper Robert Enke, Jorg Neblung, has admitted that Manchester United have asked about the German custodian but nothing has gone further.
Reports emanating from Portugal suggested the Premiership champions had rekindled their interest in the shot-stopper, who is out-of-contract in the summer, and Neblung confirmed there had been contact.
"We had talks with Manchester United last summer. They have had contact since then but I would not call it 'interest'," Neblung told planetfootball.
Whether Enke would be willing to play second fiddle to Fabien Barthez is questionable with only first team football likely to offer him the chance to stake a claim for the German number one jersey.
A number of Bundesliga clubs have cast an admiring glance over the 24-year-old with Werder Bremen heading the chase for the former Borussia Monchengladbach keeper.
"It is well known that Werder Bremen are interested in Enke as their current number one Frank Rost will join Schalke at the end of the season," said Neblung.
"Enke is seen as a good replacement and there is the additional bonus that he is available on a free transfer. He is interested in a return back to Germany should the right move come along.
"There are a lot of parties interested but I do not want to comment on their identities."
