I grew up watching English cricket in the 80's and 90's where my favorite players were the likes of Graham Gooch and Ian Botham

I've put together a side which i reckon would crush the present-day side (at their peaks). this side is based on players who played at some point in the 90s

  1. Gooch
  2. Atherton
  3. Hick
  4. Thorpe
  5. Alec Stewart
  6. Botham
  7. Jack Russell (w/k)
  8. Cork
  9. Fraser
  10. Gough
  11. Tuffnel

ahh the memories!

Crush? No way. Putting a team together between the two now, without Strauss and Pietersen:

1. Gooch
2. Cook
3. Trott
4. Thorpe
5. Ian Bell
6. Prior
7. Botham
8. Swann
9. Gough
10. Anderson
11. Finn

Would have had Stewart in there, but need another fast bowler. Prior's a better wicket keeper-batsman than Stewart by a fair way imo.

I'd sure love to hear a story about Hick.

Alright, if you insist...

Many years ago I was in Harare at the time of the Commonwealth conference, John Major was still Prime Minister ffs!

There was this charity cricket match on which I wandered down to watch and John Major himself was playing, a great cricket fan as many of you may know. Among the various other Commonwealth leaders, professionals & ex-pros were Graeme Hick & Clive Lloyd.

Clive Lloyd is my favourite ever cricketer & lived up the road from me when I was a kid to boot, in Heald Green, so it was a real thrill to see the great man playing again.

Anyway, what struck me was, despite having retired some years before, when Clive hit the ball you never heard a sound yet the ball whipped to the boundary seconds later, such impeccable timing a joy to watch & he was only messing anyway. When Graeme Hick came to the crease, he was in his prime at this stage don't forget, a regular England international, when he hit the ball an almighty crack echoed round the ground and the ball trickled into the covers.

Hick was never good enough at international level, but I guess we didn't have a great deal of options at the time.

Clive Lloyd...

Cher Lloyd was born in 1993 and Major was Prime Minister til 1997 making her 4 years old at the time. I doubt she could hold a bat now let alone then as shes a slimey little stick insect although it would explain how she was silently hitting the ball to the boundary, they're called Byes Colin.

I'm calling shenanigans.

Hick wasn't good enough?

His batting average was good, I have picked him though because of his brilliant fielding

I know you have picked a 90s team, but I used to watch a lot of cricket and was lucky enough to be at Headingley that day in 1981 when England beat the Aussies after following-on. It was an amazing afternoon, I'll always remember it.

I'd pick that team. Botham was immense, as were Willis and Dilley, but Boycott was also sublime earlier in the day.

(Believe it or not, the bookies were offering odds of 500 to 1 on a England win at lunchtime on that day).

He was a flat track bully...basically he was a quality county batsman who got found out on the international stage. Unlike at county level, there's no respite at either end, you can't just see off one bowler and hope to score a hatful against the rest.
