England pace bowler James Anderson has a suspected stress fracture of the back and is a major doubt for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka.

The 23-year-old is to see a specialist on Wednesday, but his injury is a further setback to England's plans.

Fellow paceman Simon Jones suffered knee trouble mid-match on Monday.

Lancashire coach Mike Watkinson said: "This is a huge blow for a player who has worked very hard to get back into the Test match environment."

It is thought that Anderson is highly likely to be out of cricket for several weeks, although further clarification will come after this week's consultation with medical experts.

Jones had to leave the field midway through Glamorgan's C&G Trophy match against Ireland.

What's the situation with Vaughan, Trescothick etc?
Are the gonna be fit for the Sri Lanka series?
Harmison's already out of the first test I think.
Who else is there apart from Tremlett to replace them?

First test is only 9 days away, it doesn't look good for England. Will be an interesting pace attack for England's next test. Though lets face it Sri Lanka aren't the best test nation at the moment. I think the series rests on Murali's shoulders if England can not handle his bowling Sri Lanka will win, if they can England will win.

England may surrender Ashes: Steve Waugh

Sydney:

Injuries and a lack of depth may result in England surrendering the Ashes which it won after a gap of 18 years last summer, former Australian captain Steve Waugh has predicted.

"Australia has the edge for the Ashes. They're playing in Australia, they're fairly confident and have been preparing for quite a while now,'' Waugh said about the much anticipated series down under later this year.

"And, if you're the best in the world and you lose, you want to win and get back to where you were.''

Lacks depth

He said that England was plagued by injuries and lacked depth in its ranks unlike the Australians.

"England's strength in depth isn't as deep as Australia's and you need good back up. (England captain Michael) Vaughan still has serious doubts about his knee and getting it right is crucial,'' the Aussie legend was quoted as saying in London by Herald Sun.

Waugh was in the British capital for promoting his autobiography `Out of My Comfort Zone'.

Momentum lost

He said England could not carry forward the momentum of its Ashes triumph in the subcontinent where it lost the Test series 2-0 to Pakistan and drew 1-1 with India.

"Pakistan was a let-down for England and the problem was they weren't over what happened against Australia last year. The players' profiles increased and, with the euphoria that went with success, they found it difficult.'' Waugh also cast doubts over the feasibility of appointing Andrew Flintoff as a permanent skipper.

"Andrew Flintoff did very well as stand-in captain, but I don't know whether it's a long-term option as it would be too great a workload for him.'' — PTI

Not a very important player though. England will just be looking to get the main players back in time for the ashes. I dont think anyone will sweat over james anderson being injured.

And i expect England to retain the Ashes. I just see them drawing the series. The last Ashes must have definately left a few scars on the aussies, and i dont think theyr any better off since then.. they seemed to really struggle against the reverse swing and i doubt that would change. If England start well, psychologically the Aussies could be dented. Doubt England will dominate but they definately have a chance of getting a draw.
