Emerton: Bid Confirmed
For the umpteenth time we've been linked with a move for Feyenoord's Australian midfielder Brett Emerton, this time by the planet football site, who feed Skysports with stories.
Some quotes from the Dutch club are knocking around, to the effect that we are in discussions about a mooted £8.5m deal.
We're now in a position to independently confirm that after many false starts the story does appear to be correct, at least as far as making a recent bid is concerned.
To go any further though is to enter the realms of speculation, something we're happy to leave for other sites to do......
In what is shaping up to be a big week for the club, the possible arrival of Emerton could depend on progression into the Champions League group stage and the associated financial benefits.
However, as "Emmo" appeared for his current club against Fenerbache in the same competition last week, he made himself ineligible.
The player was quoted as saying earlier in August:
"On August 13 we will play our first qualification match against Fenerbahce.
If I play in that match, I can't play in Europe for any other team. That means I will be less attractive for other teams and that is something I have to consider.
"I know that clubs are interested, but as long as these clubs don't get serious I remain a Feyenoord player.
"I will only leave Feyenoord for a great club, one I think suits me."
Previous reports suggested that United chairman Freddy Shepherd had met both the player and his family during one of his numerous globetrotting trips.
The European transfer window closes in one week, on 31st August.
Our only question continues to be - where the hell would be play in the team? A clue may lie in the fact he's played for part of his club career as a wing back.....
Our man behind the baggage racks at Newcastle airport reports a curious absence of burly fellas wearing cork-dangling hats. So far.
