Sengal striker El Hadji Diouf has confirmed that he's Anfield bound.

The 2001 African Player of the year has agreed personal terms and a fee thought to be £9million was agreed prior to the tournament by Gerard Houllier. "I'm delighted to be joining Liverpool," said the striker who played a blinder against France earlier today. "I want to become one of the best players in the world and I'm sure that at Liverpool and with a great coach like Gerard Houllier I can do that."

I was impressed of what I saw of him today but African players face a tough transition to the English game no matter how skilled they are.

From what I saw today, I was impressed with Coly more. Very cool under pressure.

True, France controlled the game. They just couldn't finish. Senegal just countered and won off a french defensive lapse.

Yes, Coly was a very cool player, and that Diao (sp?) was very good too IMO. I still think they will have a hard time beating Denmark, in fact they might be too pleased with themselves now that they fail to qualify for the next round.

Diouf rhymes with Poof, so it shouldn't be difficult.

Yes, I think he is a good striker and I think they will have a hard time to beat the Danes, that is correct. You have a problem with that?

EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool sign El Hadji Diouf

Liverpool have announced the capture of Senegal star striker El Hadji Diouf from Lens.

Diouf was in sensational form for Senegal against the World and European Champions France, and he terrorised the likes of Desailly and Leboeuf time and time again.

One of the hottest properties in world football, Gerard Houllier has pulled off a sensational signing.

Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "We can confirm that African Footballer of the Year El Hadji Diouf has now signed a five-year deal with Liverpool, which is wonderful news for everyone at the club.

"The Senegal striker will join up with his new team-mates when the squad report back for pre-season training in July."

Diouf said: "I'm delighted to be joining Liverpool. Liverpool are a club that expects to be one of the best in Europe.

"I want to be one of the best players in the world and I'm sure that at Liverpool and with a great coach like Gerard Houllier I can do that."

Dont know about this one, looked good in the one game i've seen him in, but not many african players have done well in the english game, and they usually miss quite a few games for internationals. Bit of a gamble imo.

Good value IMO. Where else can you get over 1.5 offsides per game per million quid nowadays ;)

Lens have stated that a deal has NOT been done, they are talking, but the pen has not been put to paper, besides, Liverpool have targeted the Brazil side now.
