I was taking a bathroom break when Dudek saved that penalty. Was he off his line as has been claimed? If so, why the hell didn`t the ref tell the Milan player to re-take it?

I am not saying Milan would have won had that occurred. But I don`t have the penalty shootout on tape and so hearing this makes me less inclined to congratulate Liverpool who, although deservedly making sure the game went to penalties by their come-back, didn`t deserve to win if Dudek cheated. Note I am saying `If`. Anybody care to enlighten me?

i was surprised the Milan players didn't even say anything during the shootout. i guess they knew they were going to lose anyways.

He was nearer the opposite goal line tp the one he was defending.

That's probably because they were the least qualified to say anything. If you were to watch the pen shoot-out between Juve and Milan in the CL final two years ago, Dida was WAAYYY off the line for every single kick, saved or otherwise. What goes around...etc. I just wish it hadn't 'come around' in this particular game. :(

Almost all goalies are off their line at penalties - it is the inconsistency of refs that pisses me off....one ref will judge that the penalty should be re-taken when in exactly the same circumstances another ref will let it go.

That inconsistency actually applies to every other respect of reffereeing, from playing the advantage to the brandishing of cards for offences. The only thing the refferees seem consistent on is the brandishing of the yellow card for shirt removal. An utterly absurd rule and yet religiously observed.

The linesman was on the line. If he didn't see it then something must've been wrong. He was atleast 4 yards off his line.

the only penalty that was missed where dudek was off his line was pirlos. so even if that kick was retaken and scored, we still wouldve won as long as our last pk taker (probably garcia if i saw correctly) scored.

not true, there were several penalties which milan scored (kaka and whoever else) and dudek kept doing his thing. he wasnt shaken by the goals that went by. he had a plan and wouldve stuck to it regardless.

but i agree, the atmosphere probably would have changed. its impossible to play out these "what if" scenarios.

no, the antics werent illegal whatsoever, only his being off the line. they would not have told him to stop doing it. he had obviously watched grobbelear, had a plan, and was going to stick to it win or lose.

by doing his antics he ended up off the line,i know he was trying to copy him,but if the ref had told the milan player to retake the penalty then he would have given dudek a warning, wich most likely would have caused dudek to slow down on the movement, wich would have affected his game.
im not saying it would have changed everything, but its something that could have had a big effect on him.but anyway, its just speculations.
was it an illegal save ? yes, and it should have been retaken.
did it matter ? thats open for debate.

Well even if it did cost Milan the CL you could argue that same thing won them it in 2003 so case closed......

 Of course I would take a bathroom break during a Milan/Liverpool penalty shoot-out. Neither of those clubs are my team, so ultimately the result mattered little to me.

As Murt pointed out, irrespective of whatever tricks any other team may have got up to at any point, Dudek was out of line. He illegally saved a penalty and in doing so `won` the European Cup for Liverpool. However, Milan have lost a lot of respect - they really folded like a house of cards and were gutless and spineless.

I couldn`t believe all the quotes from their players and coach - how they were too dazed and upset to motivate themselves for the shoot-out. What absolute fools - they still had the chance to win it but were too busy wallowing in being emotionally ovewhelmed. On their attitude alone Liverpool deserved to win, irrespective of what we think of them and their fans in terms of our rivalry.

I do have doubts whether the match was fixed. Milan did not even try to defend after the first goal. Serginho's penalty was way off. Shevchenko's was worse than Scholesy's. None of the Milan players shed a tear after the whistle. They could be laughing inside.

The inconsistancy is laughable. I mean how hard is it for a linesman who is standing 7 yards aways to see if the keeper is off his line.
A goal keeper has to take a step forward or else is it impossible to dive. You try diving from a standing start. But Dudek was taking two or three paces forward before diving. For one of them he was almost on the six yard line. But we shouldn't really be suprised, it was the linesman who wrongly gave Shevchenko offside in the first half

correct me if im wrong but didnt Lehmann effectively dive from a standing start...

You have to take one step, it is almost impossible not to. How are you going to get any leverage. Look at the smaller basketball players, they couldn't reach the hoops from a standing start.
