Now, I'm no expert on Hip Hop, very far from it but I know that plenty of people on the Caf are seriously into it so I just wondered how good is it?

I absolutely love that album, partly for sentimental reasons, partly because I think it's amazing music but I wonder how highly is it rated in the Hip Hop world?

It's class, all the way and although I'm white my name is Dwayne so I retain some credibility as far as black culture goes.

It's so good we even indulge the somewhat out of place last track, because Dre was upset and wanted to pay tribute to his brother.

It contains a creedo that I try to live by ("hey hey hey hey, smoke weed everyday") and two career goals I have almost achieved ("about five bank accounts, three ounces and two vehicles" & "for my n*ggaz drinkin Cognac, smokin weed, always pack 'mo than one firearm, chrome rims, ridin on..chronic in yo' system, let me know, my shit's the bomb"); it's incredible.

It's one of my favourite albums of any genre but with my knowledge of Hip Hop it could be like me saying "Barbie Girl" by Aqua is my favourite Pop album ever. Is it racist to think that I should have posted this thread in the "Epic Ass" thread to reach the right audience?

Possibly, yes. It's a great record. I remember when it dropped the whole world was like, whoa!

There is not a bad song on that album... There is not a okay song... There is not a good song... There is a few great songs... The majority: LEGENDARY.

The perfectly built album.

Palm to face

If you're into the whole gangster cliche type of rap/hip-hop then sure, this is going to be hailed as one of the all time greats. I just think that lyrically 2001 doesn't really have what it takes to be considered one of the best hip-hop albums ever. Most of the beats are great though.

Most of it isn't even west coast gangsta tradition, which is what made it such an accessible and widespread album

It's not over-rated, that's like saying Straight Outta Compton is over-rated because it's "gangsta"... Never, it broke down barriers, and 2001 was the beginning of the new era, from everything from production and credits, to, well Piracy & Napster was doing its thing and 2001 was one of the first pieces of music effected.

Amazing production...almost perfect from that standpoint.

Lyrics really aren't my thing...and the fact some of them are Ghostwritten is a blow to it's credibility for me

To actually add something constructive to the topic - the fact that it was considered a worthy succesor to 'The Chronic' is enough to suggest that it is held in very high regard by the hip hop community.

I'd still take that and Doggystyle over 2001 but not by much. All fantastic albums.

Ahh the good old days of Napster, how i miss them...

Great album. La Niggaz is the ultimate gangsta rap fantasy track and should have been the final word on the subject.

No matter who really wrote the lyrics (Jay-Z?) or produced it (Mel Man?) it's one of the best pop albums of the 90's.

Ed-ucation still makes me laugh and feck You is amazing. "You need to give him your quality time"

Classic from beginning to end.

I'll never forget the day I was watching MTV and they said "world premiere coming up right now" and didn't say the artist. This was back when everything wasn't exposed to the internet as much as these days.

I didn't even know he had a video or an album coming out. Then you hear the beat, see the car riding along and "guess who's back" Those were the days.

Maaaaaan that brings back memories, I remember that... the Hum and the tire spinning, the high pitched piano and the twang, "9-9 nigga"

AAAH
