Hello people, if I have a TV that supports 3D and the glasses required to see 'side by side' videos.. is it possible to download the movies in .mkv format via the laptop, transfer them to the PS3 with a memory stick and play them from there? If not, how do you go about getting 3D movies to work?

You would need to have a hacked PS3 running showtime to play mkv files as the PS3 doesn't natively support it. I don't know enough about how 3D is encoded but it might be possible to convert it to .mp4 or it maybe possible to use PS3 media streamer to do it for you. The only limitation with using usb is that it needs to be a file less than 4gb which I'm not sure is possible with 3D.
The only other alternative would be if you're laptop had an HDMI out and a gfx card that supports 3D and you could just use the laptop.

The only other method I could think of is by converting it to bluray but you would need a bluray burner.

Damn it, I forgot about the 4GB limitation for memory sticks. My graphic card on the laptop is NVIDIA GeForce 310M, don't think it supports 3D. Basically, I'm screwed?

According to this your GPU does support 3d.

If it has an HDMI connector just hook it up and give it a go. You will need to have the full Nvidia driver suite installed and not just MS drivers. You will also need some playback 3D software, I think VLC should handle it.

Thanks a lot mate!

I formatted my usb stick to NFST(?) file system, allowing me to transfer as large files as I want. Will try to plug the USB directly in to the TV and see if it works, otherwise I'll have to go via the laptop as you said.

I can confirm it is actually possible to play 3D movies off a USB stick! Awesome.
